Welcome to the Revit Ideas Board! Before posting, please read the helpful tips here. Thank you for your Ideas!

Print - Default should be "Combine Sheets into single file" or allow cancelation

Default Print.jpg

In the print dialog, the default is to create individual files. This is rarely a good idea, especially if you have  set of 150+ pages.

Furthermore, there is no way to cancel the whole operation if you accidentally let it print your 150 pages individually. You have to sit there and say cancel 150+ time or forcefully close and restart Revit, assuming you had remembered to save before.

I would suggest you use "Combine Separate Views/Sheets into a single file" as the default.

Also, give us an option to cancel the whole printing operation when we make the error to print the pages individually. This is a large source of frustration in the office and it could be solved easily.

The "Combine multiple selected views/sheets into a single file" radio button is checked by default in the print dialog. Once you make a change to the Print Range it changes to Create Separate Files.

What I would like is for the Combine... button to be checked at all times. The only way Create separate files should get checked is if you manually check/change it.

I think this option must be by default, but no always... sometimes is useful

this needs to be stored as a user preference.  you may prefer it always be checked, others may prefer it to be unchecked.

@m.voss.alvine

True, I will revise my suggestion to be that it stays wherever you put it. The erratic behavior of it jumping back and forth is what is frustrating. If I set it to ‘combine…’ it should stay there, no matter what other settings I change or whether or not I open and close the project.

Presumably most people have a workflow that they stick to 99% of the time. In my case I always print one big multi-sheet pdf.

This is actually one of the new features in Revit 2018 after years of complaints.  Not the ability to have Combine Multiple as the default.  But the printing process can be canceled by hitting the escape key and canceling all sheets printing.

AND it even pops up a warning when you hit print, warning you that you are printing 150 sheets individually.

I would agree that the combine multiple should be the default though.

There was an similar Idea, but was Archived few days ago... I think this is not too hard to do for the developers, hopefully they take in count this time.

I merged the archived idea with this newer one.

I would prefer "Combine..." be the default, but wouldn't mind if it just remembers the previous setting since what we print will sometimes vary based on the job. If we have multiple models to print from (and the sheets need to interleave), it's easier to print separate files with an "X" prefix and then just combine them sorted alphabetically (since Revit doesn't have a batch print to speak of). In ALL other cases we print combined (which also preserves links). NO MATTER WHAT, it should NOT change based on the Print Range setting!

Another option would be to move the "File" panel to the bottom (below Print Range, etc.) so that it's more natural when reviewing settings (top-down) instead of having to go back up and basically review the dialog twice.

I don't actually mind about the default, it just really needs an option to stop the printing if it goes by page.

Else it means cancelling 150+ pages manually or restarting Revit and going back from the last save. THAT's the dangerous part.

Based on the comment above from @Anonymous, I am marking this idea as implemented. The ability to cancel the entire job for a multi-file print/export was added in Revit 2016 R2.

For the part of the idea that ISN'T implemented: PDF Printing - Combine Multiple problem

Explorer
Explorer

Why doesn't Autodesk just add the publish menu found in AutoCAD for years.  At least that would give users the option to print individual sheets or publish to a multi page set.

I don't understand how this idea was marked "Implemented" in 2017. Maybe now the screen starts at "Print Together" but as soon as you change any other settings it switches to "print seperately" which is even worse than being the default. Probably once a week at least I almost print bogus sets because of this issue.

Default should be "Print Together" and after adjusting other print settings it should REMAIN "Print Together". Not sure why it switches out, but it's really irritating.

@chris.jones9VA3Rthe problem is the "OR" in the idea title. R2016 R2 allows you to cancel, so technically they "implemented" this idea. :cara_de_decepción: If you make a new one re-posting just the default part, I'll vote for it. :cara_con_una_leve_sonrisa:

Agreed @lionel.kai

The default option should be "Combine multiple selected views/sheets into a single file."

That should be the default option and it should not change when moving from sub-menu to sub-menu. It should only change if the other option ("Create separate files.") is manually selected by the user. Is this where I "re-post" so you can vote for it or do I post this somewhere else? I am not a forum wizard.

Hey@chris.jones9VA3R, this is a great way to get your feet wet submitting ideas! Just click on the "Submit Idea >" link on the right near the top. Pick a good title that concisely captures the idea, then include a clear description of what's wanted (& why) in the body (the way it is now, what should change, the problems it causes, etc.). Including a screenshot (like the OP does) would be good (even for a simple case like this), and link back to this one (to note that it's a partial re-post of this idea). You can play around with formatting a little bit and look at the preview.

After it's posted, put a link to it here so people can find it easily. :cara_con_una_leve_sonrisa:

Then, next time you have a Revit Idea, after searching for it first, do the same! If there are related ideas, post the link to in those. You'll be a forum pro in no time!

Currently, when printing in Revit, the 'File Settings' default to "Combine multiple selected views/sheets into a single file." - which is perfect - as discussed previously in the forums here:

https://forums.autodesk.com/t5/revit-ideas/print-default-should-be-quot-combine-shhets-into-single-f...

BeforeBefore

Unfortunately, after selecting different 'Printer Names', views in the 'Print Range', or 'Print Settings', the 'File Settings' switch to "Create separate files."

AfterAfter

This should not happen. Print settings should not change when going from one menu setting to another. Print settings should remain as selected unless manually changed by the user. As noted by @lionel.kai. Please fix. It's really annoying - especially when I'm in a hurry and forget before printing a 100 page document.

Hi, @chris.jones9VA3R ,

Here is a similar Idea...should I combine this one with yours?

PDF Printing - Combine Multiple problem - Autodesk Community

Thank you for your submission!

Kimberly

Hi Kimberly,
It's not clear to me he is referring to the same issue, but I can't quite tell. I feel like it is the same issue, but the way he words it makes me think it's not - so, I don't know. Sorry I guess that's not very helpful.

Thanks,
Chris

@chris.jones9VA3R  I can keep them as separate Ideas for now and will monitor both for activity.

Thanks again!

Kimberly

Bumping this.

I appreciate that there's now a warning popup now which says are you sure you want to create separate files because it has saved me from accidentally creating  40 pdf's.  However, a warning popup being necessary for a default setting on a routine task seems to be an indication that the wrong default is being used.

Having it stay with last used or combined seems to be a better solution; as well as not changing when other properties of the print job are altered - that is confusing / annoying.

Indeed, they thought they had fixed the problem but they didn't troubleshot it. Classic, I am upvoting your idea

Any traction on really implementing this in Revit by default ? @Anonymous @Anonymous @kimberly_fuhrman-jones ?
This behavior by default needs to change across the board, not just in one condition, please refer yourself to this all thread for details.

It hasn't been implemented properly @Tarek_K it is still not default behavior in Revit 2022 or 2023

No answer from anybody regarding a setting that has been needed by the community for ages now ?
We have to change this thing everytime we need to print, it's ridiculous.

Hi, @tlagardeAJBTA !

I feel your pain on this one! I'm going to file this one as a problem report. Thank you all for bringing it back to life.

Advocate

Sure, do you mean that this will be fixed in the next releases ? This would be great, thank you

@tlagardeAJBTA- It would be pretty great. At this point it's just a part of my routine every time I print to check this setting. Would be nice to not have to do that anymore.

We shouldn't get used to bad setups.

Was it really ? On which version ? This is Revit 2024, still the default is set on "print as separate files"

What happened ?

It looks like this was already implemented in this exact duplicate Revit Idea.

It is shocking that this is still an issue in Revit 2024

@kimberly_fuhrman-jones it obviously has not been implemented, Revit 2024.2, still the option by default....ddd.PNG

Please advise on the next step since it was marked as implemented but not tested.

@tlagardeAJBTA ,

This is from a clean install of Revit 2024.2. The default is to combine into a single file. I'm not sure why yours is different.
