Inventor HSM 3+2 Work Coordinate System Setup with Offsets

Hello.

 

I may be overthinking this.

I have a part that requires 3 operations setup on a tombstone on a vertical mill (rotary axis).

 

Operation 1 requires some drilling. So we would like to setup our G54 at the edge of the tooling fixture. The edge is show on the picture.

Operation 2 drills holes on top of the part. We would like to use a G55 and command a rotation. We got that by using the same WCS and on the tool orientation we have set the Z axis accordingly like the image below. The machine does comand a 90 degree rotation on the A axis and puts out a G55.

All good up to here:

 

Operation 3 we want to locate another corner on green fixture. This corner will requires a G56 offset and needs to be located like the picture below. The challenge is that we are not sure how to setup to command a tool rotation. We could rotate the coordinate system (make Z point to the right)and then change the tool orientation like below but that doesn't make much of a sense.

What is the proper way to make such setup, specially keeping in mind that we want to be exactly at the corner of the green fixture

  1. We have the option to setup G56 on the Machine and change the A work offset to 90 degrees. This way the machine will command A0, but in reality it will be 90 degrees.
  2. How to we coordinate tool offsets on the Z axis?
  3. Should we always keep the WCS the same and then include minor tweaks on G54, G55, G56?

I do tombstone work almost daily, I might be able to help.

I think your machine's orientation is like the little X-Y-Z on the green fixture on your 3rd picture, right?

In your setup, orient the setup like that, with the Z pointing up from the A0 face.

Then, create folders, and call them G55, G56, etc.  I believe you will get 1 folder per orientation.  Double click the folders, and make sure you override the WCS offset in each folder, to match the name.

Now in your operations, you pick "tool orientation", and set X-Y-Z as needed. 

When you post, it will output correct A angle, and correct WCS.

I hope I understood well your issue and explained correctly...  see a picture below of a typical tombstone setup (for me).
