Engraving with hsm and inventor

Anonymous

I am trying to engrave in inventor, but having trouble selecting the font to engrave.
I used the HSMWORKS font.

Is there a special way to make a part in order to engrave it?
I tried using 2d contour but I cant select the text.

Any input will be appreciated.
Thanks

You should be able to use the Trace strategy to engrave, if you are using a single line font. I'm going to ask Al Whatmough or Keith Clausen to chime in here with more detailed info, but try Trace and let us know if you are still having problems.

I tried trace, but still can not select anything.

Could I be having troubles because there are no true "edges"?
When making the part I created a sketch on the face and used the text function, then just left the sketch unconsumed.

I tried to emboss the text but it throws an error.  Seems like it does not like that font for embossing.

Thanks again for the help.

When using trace for engraving - remember to disable vertical radius leadin and leadout or set to zero. For deep engraving ~ you can also engrave with multiple depth using axual offset passes. Select sketch entities for engraving.

Allways solid simulate to verify results.

+1 on this! Cause it goes bad all to quick.

It might be that with Inventor HSM, the sketched lines indeed are not yet allowed to be selected. In SolidWorks, there is a toolbar where you can set the selection options, that way you can work around these issue's when they occur(normally are fixed quite by support, with the beta might be differen though). Not sure if you can choose what you are able to select in Inventor, cause ifso that might be your work around.

I did find some selection options in Inventor.
When I am in the CAM tab I held shift and right clicked (I think that is the way in Inventor) and was able to highlight the text, but it did not let me perform a CAM operation on it.  It would only let me edit my text.

Hopefully I am missing something silly  🙂

I have not tried it, or even seen whats in it, but did you try slot?  It might allow you to mill along the center line of text.

My question is (and i know its an inventor question) is how to get single line text?  I can only get a profile.

I just tried slot.  I was not able to make it work.
I made a single line text using hsmworks font.  Please see screen shot.

Is this the right way to do this?

Thanks

Sketch texts in Inventor can not be selected in CAM operation.
They require extra work and for the moment I see only two solutions to use text for CAM work.

Solution 1: Use the text to create an Emboss in Inventor first.
Then use a Trace or Slot operation to follow the geometry created by the emboss.

Solution 2: Convert text in a series of arcs and line segments.
The easiest way that I know to do this is by using AutoCAD as intermediary.
- create a text in AutoCAD with a single stroke font (ISOCP or whatever)
- WMFOUT
- WMFIN
- COPY in AutoCAD
- PASTE result in Inventor sketch (position and constrain the result if necessary)

This should give you the arcs and line segments that CAM operations like Trace will accept.

Here is a perfect example where you where forced to model something when a simple sketch would have sufficed... I was getting beaten up about this the other day by someone...

But see there is a need to be able to use sketched line work.

In SW this works with a sketch.

but not on the inventor variant. And this would be nice to have. But we already talked about this. 😉

Hi,

Some tricks:
1) Add more fonts to Windows, check this this thread: http://camforum.autodesk.com/index.php?topic=1952.msg8025#msg8025
2) In SolidWorks you have a "dissovle Text" option that allows true type Font sketch entity to be dissolved into lines, arcs and splines. This is important for example to be able to export these curve entities to IGES, ttf font is not supported. Although this option turns the text into dumb lines, i found this trick to result 100% in tricky text toolpaths
3) Be sure to disable "Keep tool down".

I have another possible workaround.
If you write the text in a sketch and emboss it.
You can then project the emboss contour on another sketch and these are now lines.
You can then select the lines and of course remove the emboss.

I've added an idea to the Inventor Ideastation to deal with the Sketch Text limitation that exists within Inventor:

Convert Sketch to Geometry

That is nice but only a temporary solution. Since that means you can never change the text again. So it should just be made possible to select the text in the cam side.

Yeah... if you are only thinking about using it in Inventor HSM. You can change the text again, recreate it and re-run the Text to Geometry tool.
