Using Fusion 360 with a separate document management system

The company that I work for has around four people who work on Fusion 360 drawings. The amount of ongoing Fusion work ebbs and flows depending on specific projects.
Normally, we store all of our technical drawings and documents in a separate document management system. Files need to be manually checked in and out of this system. We had been exporting files in a .step format and storing them in the system, but the problem I'm running into is that some of the assemblies share common components; and so when a component gets changed I have to update each step file. Inventor seems to handle this much better with the use of the .iam and .ipt files, but I was wondering if Fusion Team would provide a better method of getting components in and out of Fusion and allow us to use our document management system. I realize keeping it all in Fusion may be preferred, but we like to have it all in our management system so we know where everything is instead of this is over here and this is over there.
Thanks.
