Project Management: How to approach larger projects?

Background:
I am a hobbyist that is learning CAD. I have a background in programming, working with multiple people on the same project. At this point, I am still a hobbyist, but want to learn the "proper" way to work as a team member in Fusion in case I do a career shift in the future. As such, I want to work as a team member in a team of one.

Project:
I am working on a belt sander project (pictured in different working versions) that has multiple pieces that can be reused for different variations of the same machine, such as upgrades and interchangeable tool arms.

Current Approach:
I keep a file with common (master) measurements that is imported (derived) into each file as I go. I am then designing each part in a separate file, in order to later create composite assemblies from multiple parts, that are then imported into a final file for visualization. I was working in a single file, but found that changing certain items would cause everything to get wonky due to correlations and constraints. So my current system works much better.

Question for everyone:
When working on large projects that involve multiple people, how do you divide up the project in a manner that works both for the team, and for how Fusion wants to operate?

I have previously posted this on FB, but wanted to repost the question here to get more responses.
