hi

1-I don't understand surface section in Fusion 360. Whats the difference from the solid section? why and when should I use it? what are the advantages of using it? ultimately we want a solid body . why not just draw 2d sketch and extrude it?

2- By the way I couldn't get create form section too. And the question details are similar with the question above.

Hi @Anonymous ,

When you say 'Section' i believe you referring to the Surface Workspace.

Each workspace in fusion has its own importance, Depending on the user working style and purpose.

  • Solid modelling (I wont go much here)
    • Efficient to use, easy
    • Has mass properties.
  • Surface modelling
    • Has “zero” thickness no mass
    • Good control over curved surfaces.
    • Used in FEA Simulation for
      • Midplane surface bodies.
      • CFD on Car bodies, airplane bodies
    • When there is a discontinuous/split solid surface, single Surface geometry can be created for CNC machining.
    • While importing some CAD formats some of the surface will be lost, Using surface commands we can fix them as a BRep.
    • Still today some CAD designers use surface for designing car body panels, aircraft fuselages, fan blades, wind turbines.
  • Sculpt/Form
    • Another technology that Fusion 360 has in the form of T-splines
    • Difference is, When you create a face/body, every face has tangent to its neighbour. It's smooth, it's continuous, you can manipulate and many more..

Hope this answers your question.
