using parameters between models

I am using T-slot bars in my models. To avoid having to create a seperate bar on every occasion i modeled one and gave the length a parametric value. After importing a bar like that in a new model changing the parameter value gives me a bar of the desired length. Lately the parameters of referenced models do not appear in the change parameter dialog. Is this indeed changed? What is the preferred way of solving my problem?

when you say "importing" here, how are you getting your bar into your new model?  If you are using "insert into current design" from the data panel, that type of reference has never exposed the parameters of the referenced design.  However, if you are then using "Break Link" after the Insert to make this independent of the source, then yes, the parameter should appear in the design, and you should be able to edit it.

If you can share a screencast and the model that is showing the issue, we can better answer your question.

I've been frustrated for years now that this is not built in.  Can Autodesk not at least include parameters when you use the "derive" function, and keep them updated with the file it was derived from, just as the derived object is updated from the original file?

Being able to import parameters with derive is really helpful, although sometimes I have to try importing several times. I'm not sure why sometimes the imported components parameters dont show up. Have you ever had that? or is there any strange hack you need to do (like making a model before etc) so that they show up.

thanks

Are you sure you marked the parameters you want to come over with the Derived model as Favorites?  Attach your model and we can take a look.

I fixed it with this model by just importing it a second time and then just deleting the first derived model. Maybe I wasn't selecting it. I'll post an example if it comes up again.
