Hello, i have been trying to make planes in fusion360 and have downloaded the fusion360 add-in called DAT to spline but every time i try and import coordinates, it says 'unkown DAT format' and i have one file with the coordinates that works but it only draws a straight line. Pls help. Thx.

Fusion will require a file with 3 columns (X Y Z),  usually the airfoil files are just X Y.

If the plug in doesn’t add the third, could be a reason.

Thanks for the idea but i have tried both with X, Y and X, Y, Z but fusion360 keeps saying 'unkown DAT format'. Any other ideas?

When I was starting out in Fusion, I was ok with this Spline from CSV, 3 columns, and airfoil data.

isbcsv.PNG

The CSV part is Comma Separated Value text file, and read able in Excel style documents.

Resulted in way too many spline points for best results in Fusion.

Since then I prefer to trace the airfoil direct off the (canvass) plans.

Can you share the dat file?

@emanuelRK6LE
You have marked the CSV import as the solution.
But you wanted to know why it does not work with "Dat to Spline".
To find out where the problem is you would have to share the dat file.

Did you try the dat file?

ClarkY.jpg

Then you should get this profile.
I always use Dat to Spline and it works all the time.

Hi

I'm having a similar problem. I have carefully followed Lars Christensons advice from Livestream 120, using the "Airfoil_DAT_to_Spline_v2.0" script. Typically I took NACA 2424 from airfoiltools.com, copied the source dat file onto Notepad (as Lars did) and saved it as a txt file. I called that file up in the script, but get an error message "Wrong file format. Cannot convert second string to number". I input wersys file for the Clark Y airfoil, and that worked fine. I can't work out what is wrong with NACA 2424 file. I have attached the file I created. Would really appreciate some help here as this problem is really holding me up.

Thanks in anticipation

Edit that file, and remove the first line.

Hi all

I tried removing the title of the airfoil as suggested by daveb YYPCU, but unfortunately it still had the same problem.

I then carefully inspected Werseys file for the Clark Y and found that different in specific aspects:

a) In Werseys airfoil, there was always five digits following the decimal point

b) In Werseys airfoil, there was only a single space between the x axis coordinate and the y axis coordinate

c) Werseys airfoil was titled

I modified my file in line with the above to get the following, and Hey Presto, it worked.

I'm not sure which of a), b), and c) above caused the issue, but modifying them all worked at least.

I've attached the modified txt file for reference.

Hi, Max!

With all regard to Lars Chistensen he made a lot of errors when demonstrated how to use my script.

Do not follow him without double check.

In your case all simple.

In second line should be "1.00000 0.00000" without quotas. Script is looking for float values.

NACA_2424_TXT.jpg

Save updated file and Airfoil DAT to Spline will process it.

NACA_2424.jpg

Please note that the first line with title of airfoil is mandatory. Do not delete this line.

As you can see above new sketch will be automatically renamed with use of title with scale suffix.

This will help you later when your design will have dozen of different airfoils.

I have tried your file co-ordinates and I still get the error 'Unkown Dat Format'. here are the files. sorry I haven't posted in a while. the n0012-il.csv file is the one that just plots a staight line and the attempt 1.csv file are the coordinates @wersy gave me.

If you edit the .dat as I did it will work.

Not only that, you need to do more.
There must be only 1 space between x value and Y value - NO comma.
I also added 2 decimal places to the values 1.
