Did I do something wrong? Or do I have to wait for everything to expire before appying for the free version? How do I get back to the personal use version?

This is a new policy for Autodesk.  When your renew a Personal License of Fusion 360, they give you a full trial version for 30 days.  Once the 30 days are over, it will switch to a Personal License.  Marketing is trying to get you to subscribe after you see all the added benefits of a full subscription license.  Enjoy the full version of 30 days.

Well that's confusing.  I just spent a lot of time trying to fix this.

Thank you for this information. I am in the same situation. I hope it reverts back to personal use at the end of the 30 days.As a hobbyist, I can't justify the price of a subscription.

I think you hopes are well placed.  In this Forum post, the poster verified that after 30 days, he reverted back to a Personal License.  Read it to the end where he too was worried and told me he would let me know the outcome, which he did.

I guess that should be kind of described during the renewal process to avoid confusions, as it is now "a bit fuzzy" 😄
