Transient Results Plot Window - Curve Display Bug?

Hello everybody,

I've noticed some strange behaviour of a Transient Results Plot window about which I'm not sure whether it's intentional or not. Here it is.

Results in the Transient Results Plot window for a simulation with an element deletion enabled are changing when moving the slider to a different step. Is it because only "save interval" results are displayed at first and then any other intermediate results are shown? I noticed this behaviour in different simulation models.

Hi Martin, good question!

This is actually expected behavior believe it or not. When we interpolate the results in between the intervals output by the solver, we calculate new values at each gridpoint on the mesh.Since we are plotting the 'global' maximum strain, the max strain can change locations over time. What you are seeing is the maximum strain increasing at a point then decreasing, until another point has higher strain, then the graph begins tracking a new maximum location.

If you turn on the Min/Max labels and move the slider you should see the location moving to different locations on your model.

We recently discussed this behavior and we think we should add the ability to graph the results at a user selected location, that might be more useful than plotting the global values.

If you have a different suggestion about graphing the result values we would love to hear your input.

Sorry for any confusion!

Hi Rob,

thanks for the answer. I understand that concept. But as you suggested, there's no doubt that plotting values from the user specified location (or locations simultaneously) would be more useful.

I've noticed a couple of extra details regarding the plot window. All are described below.

#1 You cannot copy the values from the table view in order to put them to Excel or any other external table processor.
#2 I think the time values would be more convenient instead of the step values as we are in the event simulation and thus interested in what's going to happen in next xx milliseconds.
#3 If you want to synchronize the graph with the graphics window, you cannot do that for two or more different results (for example stress and strain simultaneously) because the plot results always switch to the same result type.

#4 Would it be possible to add an ability to plot also the energy values?

Thanks Martin, all good points.

We have plans to make improvements to the plots and we will definitely take your feedback into account. I believe some of these items have already been discussed and may be in the plan.
