Thread does not scale with user parameters

Hi,

I'm reletively new to Fusion360, but have been stuck on this issue for quite a few hours. I'm in the process of modelling some threaded tubes to hold old coins that I collect.

As multiple sizes of the model are required, to save time, user parameters have been used to change the inner diameter of the tube. When adjusting the parameter everything besides the thread scales correctly. The outer wall of the cylinder should remain at 2mm, but seems to be increased by the difference of the parameter change.#

I'm not sure if there is something that I am doing wrong, or if this is a bug within the software, but any help or pointers in the right direction would be very appreciated.

Please find attached a screen recording of this below -

I apologise in advance if I have posted this in the incorrect place.

Many Thanks

This is the way the thread feature works.  The diameter of the cylinder to which the thread is applied is driven by the thread spec.  Changing the parameter in your design does what you expect to the cylinder, however, the thread designation, then, changes the cylinder diameter back to what is indicated in the thread spec.  What would you expect the thread to do?  I am recording a screencast to illustrate, I'll add it later

Hi Jeff,

Many thanks for taking your time to reply to my query.

In regards to your first comment where you say 'What would you expect the thread to do?'. My thought process is that the thread would scale upwards with the set inner diameter of the tube. I have included some screenshots showing how I would expect this work.

17mm.PNG

^ 17mm original size

 30mm-result.PNG

^ 30mm actual result after changing the user parameter of the inner dimension of the tube

30mm-expected.PNG

^ 30mm expected result after changing the user parameter of the inner dimension of the tube

So, really my question would be - "Can the thread size be changed with a user parameter?" I should be able to calculate the required size of the thread using an equation on the user parameters screen.

Please let me know if you would like any further clarification from my comments.

Many thanks again for your time!

Hi @jeff_strater ,

I think that I have figured this issue out!

From spending the morining researching how the thread tool works, I believe that it is not possible to adjust the size of it using user parameters.

To overcome this, the coil tool was instead utilised to create a custom thread which scales correctly when the user parameters are adjusted.

Please correct me if I am wrong in this assumption.

Many thanks for taking a look into the original issue at hand!

As a reference I have included a screencast of this in action -
