The application wont start without holding shift key

The application wont start without holding shift key

Ever since I upgraded my RAM from 12 to 24GB (which was about a year ago now) the application wont start properly. Just clicking on the application shortcut will show the loading screen but then it just sits there forever and doesn't progress unless I then click on the shortcut again while holding down the shift-key (effectively starting a second session of the application) then it starts up and brings me to the user interface.

I'm running windows 10 and update regularly, Fusion 360 also updates itself every now and then. Once started the program works fine.

Any idea's what's going on?

That's an interesting case! Does holding Shift do anything for you in other workflows in other processes or apps that are running at the same time? Generally, Ctrl + Shift + Click will allow us to launch with admin rights, but without Ctrl I'm not quite sure what that function could be.

There are a few sources of information to gather that can help us find a clue:

  1. Collect Fusion 360 logs and upload them here
  2. Save and upload a DXdiag report
    • When asked if you want to check if drivers are digitally signed, go ahead and allow it.

    • DXdiag generally doesn't contain personally identifying information, but it does report things like user account or computer name - you are welcome to open the saved file and scrub these if they contain anything revealing, but usually this isn't necessary.

  3. Sample/Dump the Fusion 360 process while it is Not Responding, using the Windows Task Manager, and link it here
    • Process-dump.png
    • These process samples can get quite large, so you might want to upload it to your A360 drive and share the file link here rather than upload it directly to the post.

We should at least start with (1) and (2) above, (3) if there are no obvious clues otherwise.

Will get round to the dumps and log shortly, thanks for the assistance! As for the shift key, it normally starts a second session of an application. I'm talking about the taskbar shortcuts mind you, not a desktop shortcut.

Here's the link to the windows dump

@Anonymous, do you have a Team Hub, or any issues connecting to your team hub or using the data panel?

@Anonymous, that would be a No to all 3. The app did say it was using the cloud data though if that means anything to you...

@Anonymous, that process dump suggests that Fusion is freezing when loading the materials library (which initializes on startup as adexmtsv.exe.

A few things we can try related to this:

  1. Confirm that adexmtsv.exe running when Fusion 360 is, either frozen or when launched
  2. Collect and upload log files for this process found at %localappdata%\Autodesk\Common\Material Library\20041001\adexmtsv.log
  3. if adexmtsv.exe if is frozen, create and upload a process dump
  4. if all else fails: capture the process using Process Monitor from the moment you doubleclick Fusion to when it Freezes (curious if we'll see adexmtsv not start, or quit unexpectedly)

"A few things we can try related to this:

  1. THAT EXECUTABLE DOES START BUT CLOSES SHORTLY THEREAFTER (PROCESS MONITOR SHOWS SUCCESS EVEN THOUGH THERE ARE A NUMBER OF BUFFER OVERFLOWS).
  2. DONE
  3. DOESN'T APPEAR TO HAVE FROZEN AND DOES RESTART AFTER shiftCLICKING THE SHORTCUT AGAIN
  4. CAPTURED, uploading aws

From the look of things, the materials library is crashing at startup, which likely causes Fusion 360 to hang while waiting for a response. The second launch seems to be working as expected.

This might indicate that your Favorite Materials library is corrupted. If you don't use Favorite materials, you could try backing up, then deleting the Materials Library folder, then reinstalling Fusion.

You can find this at %localappdata%\Autodesk\Common\Material Library.

Should this not work, we can try to generate a crash report specifically for the materials library, but let's cross that bridge when we come to it.
