The ability to select anything stops working until I restart Fusion 360 (macOS)

Often times when I'm trying to select specific entities, like faces or edges, the select tool won't respond at all. It doesn't highlight any of the entities, and when I try to select something anyways, it doesn't do anything. I noticed it also locks up the X-Y-Z camera tool in the top right, because I can't choose an axis or the home view.

I've been having this problem the entire time I've been using Fusion 360 (I'm new). Happens nearly every day, and it's getting really frustrating. I'm on macOS (Macbook Pro) with Fusion 360 version 2.0.3034. This problem has been experienced on both my work laptop and home laptop. One is a 2015 model MBP, and the other is the 2016 model.

This just happened when I was trying to build a sketch, and I wanted to project some other elements onto the sketch. It was completely unresponsive. But it hasn't been limited to just sketches. For example, I was trying to add a fillet to an edge a while ago and I was unable to select the edge (or any other edge, or any body, etc).

The only work-around I currently have is that I must choose the select tool from the drop-down, and then it will work once, before going back to not working at all. It does not work if I use the "select" button on the toolbar. It must be from the drop-down next to the button. Beyond that, I will restart Fusion 360 to get the functionality back.

Has anyone else experienced this? Know of a fix? I really enjoy Fusion 360, but this bug is making it increasingly difficult to work with.

Hey @evan.fosmark,

Thanks for posting and welcome to the Fusion community! I'm sorry to hear that you have been having a hard time selecting things!

I just performed some quick tests on my MacBook Pro (macOS Sierra 10.12.3, Retina, 15-inch, Mid 2015) and I wasn't able to reproduce the issue. Would you mind recording an Autodesk Screencast of the issue as it appears on your machine? I'm just curious to see if there are any specific steps that you are taking to reproduce this behavior..

Do you have any peripherals connected to the machine when this behavior occurs (i.e 3DConnexion product, or Wacom tablet)? If so, I'm thinking that one of those might be stealing the focus of Fusion when connected. If you have any peripherals connected, could you try disconnecting them to see if that improves the behavior? It would also be worth making sure that you are using the most updated drivers for the peripheral (if you have one connected that is).

Are there any particular designs that you are working on that display this behavior more than others? If so, would you mind sharing the design(s) with me? We have a great article, linked here, that describes the many ways that you can share your designs with others. For the purposes of troubleshooting this issue, I would recommend sharing a public link to the design. This will allow me to make modifications to the design on my machine during my troubleshooting while leaving it intact within your project.

Thanks in advance for the information! Please let me know if you have any questions or concerns.

Cheers,

Mike Tessier

I've seen similar posts and it turned out not all selection filters were enabled, there's an option at the bottom of the selection menu to Select All. Restarting Fusion does reenable them and they were see the same sort of problems you're seeing.

Also same issue for me.

Sometimes I can just close and re-open my project, sometimes I need to do a total restart.  It's always the navigation (like the above screen cast) or while I'm attempting to move a body.

I have the same issue as well as another one that prevents me from selecting anything on the computer at all until I hit ctrl+alt+del and clicking on the screen and then clicking on cancel. Then I can use the mouse again. It only happens with fusion, never anything else. The second part that prevents use of the mouse in windows has happened to me off and on for a couple of years.

The inability of selecting anything in fusion started within the past month or so. I have to close out fusion and start it back up for it to work again. I have not found any posts about the windows mouse issue and added it to this because it has to be something similar.

When it happens in fusion, I cannot even open a drawing or right click properly. Some elements are still able to be selected in the ui only.

I have had the same problem, always with selecting either 'project' or 'intersect' of other sketch entities, or similar, simple entities. The selection filter change, as mentioned above, does not need changing; even though a restart of the program (which is almost always the necessary "fix") supposedly resets the selection filters I have found the settings unchanged when this problem arises: they are set at "all" and "select through" makes no difference either. I have had this problem in files that are massive with tons of graphic content, 3d sketches, intersecting surface definitions etc...or, as with today, a set of very few, very simple sketches, all 2d on the same construction plane.

I would be willing to pay for the subscription to this otherwise fairly robust program but I spend so much time with this problem, including restarts, that I consider it a matter of principal not to pay. If I were a paying subscriber I would get even MORE ANGRY at this stupid asinine, problem which has obviously dogged Fusion 360 for years. GET IT FIXED!!! I would rather pay for another program at some point.

I am in the very same situation.

I have to restart Fusion 360 many times in as "session" because of sudden "lockings" are happening. Suddenly I can't move lines in a sketch or when I rotate the orbit it has an extremely large radius which makes it impossible to navigate. When shutting down and restarting the orbit and other things are back to normal. I have never ever been so frustrated using a program since I entered the computer world back in 1980. Would it be better if I pay for the program? I doubt it, therefore I have to live with it or simply change to something that is working, because Fusion 360 to me is like an early alfa-version with crashes every time I quit the program..
