Surface thickening: Fail

Hi,

Please see link above (I hope that works).

As a beginner, I am attempting to thicken a surface for the first time. The object linked is a test of a surface with thickening not dissimilar from what I will eventually create, formed with loft of two profiles and one guide line. The thicken process fails with an error message stating, "Could not create a valid result." The reason for this failure is not clear to me; the surface has no tight corners and is very smooth and the analysis shows nothing obvious.

I've tried a bunch of things:  redoing the loft, surface thicken, solid thicken. adjusting the various parameters etc.

My goal is to have a final thickness of .5 mm and to 3D print the result.

Thanks for all help,

Phil

Your link works fine but you forgot to check the ability to Download so no one can access your model.

Thank you for responding John.

I am a retired hobbyist using Fusion under the 'Personal Use' license, which does not allow me to check the privacy setting.  So, best I can do is attach a couple of pix and perhaps you can recreate the issue.

Thanks again,

Phil

In the normal course, that should Thicken.

Suspect - too many Spline points.

Base should be 3 point Spline,

Rail 2 point spline.

Adjust the handles.

There should not be white points in that pic.

Use Inspect Tools.
Send a pic with your rail curve, curve comb.

Send another pick with the surface contour mapping, (can’t remember the menu item name)

will be colour shaded.  Green is good, purple is not.

Thanks for the pics...

Yep, pic 2 of this set - curve comb is not ideal,

The camel humps are causing the yellow bands in pic 3.

The other curve looks ok from here.

Oops, just as bad, when you check the outline - not symmetric, and has bumps.

Fusion requires more accuracy than your file for better results'.

Struck me that the Revolve Tool will get you there.

I stopped without the 3rd sketch when it dawned on me.  If you want to persevere with Loft, let me know.

Dave,

thank you very much for the effort you put in, much appreciated.

My issue will be that the profile will not be symmetrical.  I'm attempting to 3D print a small indoor/park flyer RC Airplane.  The basic frame/body is a left and right half glued together about 200mm long... came out very nice when printed.  Carbon fiber tail boom, Depron foam wings and vertical and horizontal stabs.

I was hoping that I could design and print a very light body cover (left and right) which would follow the outline of the outer edge of the above drawing, have a 'slot' cut for the wings and be open at the back.  Definitely not symmetrical.

I think I've learned a lot and will take a shot at this with the actual profile I need.

Thanks again.

Same process, different shape.

Needs Rail sketches to remove more of the shrink-wrapping tendency.
