Surface extruding a line in a specific direction

I drew a sketch line that i want to extrude. for some reason the extrude will only go in the up direction. I need it to go to the side. Is there a way to change the direction of the extrude from a line? I'm sure i'm missing something. Thanks for your time.

Extrude will always go in the direction of the sketch normal.  If you want a different direction, create another sketch, add a line in that direction, and use Sweep.
