Strange gold colour sometimes appears when making a surface loft/patch

I have run into this strange thing recently where a loft or patch becomes gold. There seems to be nothing wrong with the model but seemingly at random a patch or loft will come out gold. I have tried just changing the appearance and it does not work to change it. Does anyone know what causes this?

The gold colour is depicting the "inside" of the surface, can be toggled with Modify > Reverse Normal Command
