Split face tool fails to split all relevant faces

I am attempting to split faces on two bodies so that the appearances can be modified and I can in effect have text which says 'N35RYZ' across the side. The file 'Nacelle L v5' contains the result I expected. However, when I attempt the exact same workflow on the right nacelle the inboard part of the faces (near the protruding pylon) split but the outboard faces (opposite the pylon) fail to splot. The file 'Nacelle R v5' contains this error.

Does anybody know how I can split the relevant faces on the right nacelle? Seems like a very strange issue to me.

I'm not sure why it fails to split but a way around it is to split the surface down the center and then the letters will split the half surface on the proper side without splitting the far side.
