Split body - no intersection between targets error - need to split exactly in half, but face

I'm trying to split a body straight down the middle. It's for a shin armor piece, so it's a cylindrical-ish shape. The only issue is that on the back of the shin piece, there's a small space to leave some wiggle room for putting the piece on. The face of the interior side of that space lines up exactly with the mid-line of the shin that I need to split the body on, so splitting the body gives me the "no intersection" error. Here's an image that helps explain.

I recommend remodel from scratch as native geometry rather than stl.
