Solidworks import failed

After following a link for the translation report, I see "Version of the file format is not supported". The info at

https://knowledge.autodesk.com/support/fusion-360/troubleshooting/caas/sfdcarticles/sfdcarticles/Fil...

Is not helpful. I suspect the file is too old or too new. How are we supposed to know?

If you have access to SolidWorks, then export the file in STEP format. Then you should be able to import it into Fusion 360.

I suspect…

I suspect that you are attempting to open with free personal license rather than paid commercial license.

Can you Attach the SOLIDWORKS file(s) here and end all doubt?

(I’m pretty sure it has nothing to do with the age of the file(s).)

@TrippyLighting, I don't have access to SW, I can only afford F 360.

@TheCADWhisperer , I have the "standard license"; I do mostly personal work but I wanted to import other formats, especially SW. I must say, I've had a lot of problems and disappointments.

I tried to attach the file and post, but I got a different error message:

  • The attachment's ee_sx3162_p2.sldprt content type (application/octet-stream) does not match its file extension and has been removed.

Googling around, I often see application/octet-stream associated with sldprt files, so I don't think that is an actual problem. Moreover, the file works fine with the Daussault e-drawings viewer. The file is from Omron's website and should be good.

If you know of another way to attach a file that is extension tolerant, let me know.

Right click on the file and select Send to Compressed (zipped) Folder.

Attach the resulting *.zip file here.

I have attached the sldprt as a zip file.

I also asked tech support about this, and while they are still looking into it; they say that the file was originally (or may still be?) a Parasolid.

I changed the extension to x_t and then X_b, and Fusion 360 "opened" them without complaint, but there was nothing to see.

Do you see the file Attached here?

You cannot Attach files via email reply- you must use the web forum.

Which version of Inventor did you try?

No problems here with Inventor 2022.2

Later: Oh! I just noticed, that it's a question in Fusion 360 Support. But I could upload the sample to F360, as well.

can also use the grabcad workbench to convert a .sldprt to a step file which you can then open in fusion, omron also has the .step file on their website which you can open in fusion without a commercial license without any problems.

I did (attempt to) send the file via the web forum. I'm trying again; I dropped it in the box below and still see it.

Thanks,

@WHolzwarth , to be clear, did you open the file EE_SX3162_P2.sldprt? I just tried again, after applying an update, and it failed with the same error.

@xer00, I'll look at the workbench in grabcad. So far, all of the sldprt files that I have downloaded from that site have worked.

I agree that it is good to have workarounds as they will be needed sometimes, but being able to fairly directly use sldprt files is the main reason I don't use the free version of Fusion 360.

Well this is interesting.

I opened the file in SolidWorks and it showed that it was an older version file.

I tried opening in Fusion 360 and Inventor and it failed to translate.

I saved the file in SolidWorks 2021 and it then opened fine in Fusion 360.

So your hunch about the age of the file being the issue might be the cause.

I often switch back and forth between software using the STEP format. Sometimes it's not 100% perfect but still acceptable

@ all

I've had some correspondence with Tech Support and the gist is that Fusion 360 should be able to open SolidWorks parts from version 2002 onwards. For some reason, this one did not work and they are checking.

One possibility is that this file appears to have been imported into SW as a Parasolid, rather than being created in SW.

The development team is going to look at it; if I hear anything I'll will update this.

Thanks for the suggestions and investigations,

John
