Sketch seems to be defaulting to body rather than component

I'm trying to draw a two-walled L-shape. The side wall is an extruded extension off the front wall. I start by drawing a rectangle, extruding it to form a rectangular solid ("component") and then draw a rectangle and extrude it off the back of the front wall to form my simple shape. The problem is when I draw the rectangle to start the 2nd wall it always lands on the far surface of the original wall, not the leading surface viewed from the back. What am I doing wrong?

This started from Kevin Kennedy (Productdesignonline.com) simple One-Board Birdhouse tutorial, where I was getting the same problem so I simplified it with my own sketch attached here, still replicating the problem. I must have a preference setting wrong.

Any help appreciated.

@cthkah - I see that this sketch is on the "back side", but I was able to sketch on the "front side" just fine.  Can you record a screencast of what you are seeing, so that we can get a better idea what is going on for you?  Thanks.

Hi Jeff. I notice you click on "finish sketch" after drawing each component. Maybe that's it. I was not aware of that being a necessary step. I'll try to figure out how to do a screencast, but meanwhile I'll see if that fixes it.

Hi Jeff, I did a screencast and posted it to the category "3D Modeling" under the subject heading "cthkah@gmail.com for https://forums.autodesk.com/t5/user/viewprofilepage/user-id/226105". I assume this goes to Autodesk and you'll find it.

@cthkah - that link does not resolve for me.  I tried searching for your screencast using your name and the subject title in this post, but was unable to find it.  You should have gotten an email when the screencast was published, which contains a link.  But, you can also go just below this edit box in the forum response page, and there is a tab labeled "My Screencasts" that should list the one you want.  You can insert it directly into a forum response (don't forget to click the "Insert" button).
