Should sheet metal flanges fuse when touching? I think not

When you create a sheet metal body, where you close an item so they just touch, the ends fuse instead of staying separate. That does not really make sense when modelling with sheet metal. For solids it would. I know the workaround is to just a bit of tolerance, but it should not be necessary.

Hello @hoegge,

thank you for posting and for bringing our attention to this issue!

I was able to reproduce the behavior. Once the flanges are merged, they do not unfold in Flat Pattern work space. I also noticed that no warning appears when the faces of the flanges are just "touching", which is the case when they intersect:Sheet metal intersection warningSheet metal intersection warning

I logged the issue in with our development team as FUS-40600. I would encourage you to post an idea in our Idea Station as well about a feature that would allow the user to decide if the flanges are to be merged or stay separated.

For now, please use the workaround you mentioned in your post, i. e. applying tolerance to the closing flange. Thanks!

Best regards,

Can you share a design where that is still that case ?

That would help bringing it to the attention of the right people.

These are two different sheets and should not be "fused".

Thanks, but I really meant the .f3d design file, not screenshots 😉

Yes, add a bit of clearance - just like in the real world.
