Scale of imported svg

When inserting an .svg file, the scale of the result is not the same as that of original .svg file. In addition, it does not appear to be a constant scale factor. The first time I noticed it, the scale factor necessary to correct the size of the file appeared to be about 0.38. I suspected it might be an issue with units since this is near the conversion factor for inches to cm. But no, close but not exact.  The next time I tested it, the scale factor was almost exactly 0.5. Then I found a post that said the scale factor is essentially exactly 0.35277777777778. This might be true some of the time, maybe even most of the time, but as described above, it is not always true. Does anyone know what is going on here?

There are other issues with it, but I have better luck bringing in DXF files. There's a bit more flexibility in that flow for agreeing on the units involved.

Hi,

For years I have been checking the dimensions when importing SVG (not only in Fusion). I have not yet been able to recognize a reproducible scaling value.

I don't think that is an option for me. I'm using a Shaper Trace which creates .svg files, so that is what I have. I think I'll just put calibration marks in the .svg file so I can calibrate it after it is in F360. Thanks for your help.

Hi there, I'm new to this and I have the Shaper Trace as well.  How would I go about adding/using the calibration marks?

I made a small "ruler" out of scrap acrylic glass. I cut a series of small holes exactly 1" apart. See first photo. Lay the "ruler" on the paper and put a black dot at two locations. Optionally write the dimension between dots (i used dots 5" apart). Proceed as usual with Trace. When the file is opened in F360 measure the space between dots. In my case it was 10"), so I did a move copy with make a copy box checked. I then scaled the new copy by 0.5, and F360 measures the new drawing correctly at 5".  See third photo. Hope this helps.

I had the same issue - the scaling factor of the imported SVG was never consistent no matter what I tried. The solution proposed by @bentwookie worked much better for me. Export the file as a DXF and then import the DXF into Fusion. Thank you for the solution 🙌.

 

For those using the Shaper Trace, you can verify the height by importing the Trace file into Shaper Studio first. By default, Shaper Studio will show the outer dimensions of the file. That's how I was able to confirm the accuracy of the DXF over SVG import.

 

Importing as a DXF exactly matched the dimensions I was seeing in Shaper Studio (8.439" in my case). Importing as a SVG with a scaling factor of `1.xxx-xxxxxxxx` was close, but still had an incorrect final value in Fusion 360 of 8.55".
