Save as Mesh Lock up/crash

Ever since the most recent update whenever I attempt to create an STL file from a design, Fusion locks up permanently.  The screen goes dim and Windows reports the program is unresponsive.  This happens if I choose 'Save as Mesh' or try any of the various options to send to slicer programs etc.

I've tried a full re-install of the program and reset all my preferences to default but the behavior persists.

I noticed there were quite a few changes in the last update around the exporting/saving/printing features, so I assume it's a bug introduced there.

Hello,

Thanks for reporting this issue. We would like to get to the bottom of your problem, but as we are unable to reproduce it on our end, we would need to have some more details. Can you please answer the questions below:

1. Does this happen with all your designs or only with a certain one? Does it also happen if you just create a plain box and try to export that?

2. Could you upload a .f3d file with a design that triggers the problem?

3. Does this also happen when you use the "export" option or only when sending to a print utility (e.g. prusa slicer or Cura)?

4. Are you able to create a Report after the crash or does Fusion just hang and needs to be shut down? If you are able to send a report, please copy the report number and send it to me (feel free to do so via direct message).

I hope these details will help us narrow down the problem.

Thanks,

Lukas

1 & 2. It happens with every design, even a simple box.  I'm attaching an f3d file of just a box I created from a single rectangle sketch that triggers the issue.

3. It seems to happen with nearly any Export or Save as mesh action, regardless of the settings, aside from Export to f3d.  It locks up when doing Export to STEP, Save as Mesh (3MF), Save as Mesh (STL Binary), Save as Mesh (STL ASCII) and any of the Send to Print Utility options.

4. The program hangs completely and permanently so it doesn't seem like there are any options to generate a report.  I have to force Windows to close it.  I'm attaching an image of the screen when this happens.

I'm also attaching a log snippet from what I think is the session log, it's in AppData\Local\Autodesk\Autodesk Fusion 360\<random string>\logs.  I can't parse much of it but it seems like there's one line where it throws an error about the file its trying to write:

20240924T094252 E .8400 "C:/Users/zer0v/Downloads\box_test.step" doesn't exist. Error Message: The system cannot find the file specified

That kind of says permissions error to me, but I've tried to do the same export/save in a bunch of different locations to the same result.  If there's any other information you need please let me know.

Edit: Some additional information, I just uninstalled and deleted the entire AppData/Autodesk folder and then did a clean re-install and the problem persists.  Also, I can recreate the error if I select 'save to a project in the cloud' and uncheck 'save to my computer' on the screen after hitting ok on the Save as Mesh window.

There is a very old bug where Fusion will lockup if the last directory or drive you saved to is no longer available. See this post for how to fix.

@HughesTooling Thank you for your reply.  It certainly does feel like some sort of permissions error, but none of the solutions offered in that other thread seem to help.  I'm saving to the same directory I've been using for the entire time Fusion has been installed on this computer.

It occurs no matter where I try to save the file, local or network drives etc.  There was no LastDirectoryOptionId that I could find in %APPDATA%\Autodesk\Neutron Platform anywhere.  I did delete the entire AppData/Autodesk directory between reinstalls just now that I feel like that's probably not it.

And the biggest oddity about the whole permission angle is that I can save f3d files just fine.

Do you get the same problem with the insert tools as well?

@HughesTooling All of those functions seem to operate just fine, no errors or crashes.

@lukas.fuhrmann Some additional information, I get the same locking up behavior if I try to open a STEP file.

@lukas.fuhrmann I was just able to get around the issue!  I switched the toggle to 'Work Offline' and now all import/export functions seem to work fine.  I'm able to save an STL and it opens fine in my slicer.

If I flip the toggle back to 'Work Online' it locks up when performing the exact same action.  So there's definitely some sort of network activity that's hanging the program.

Thanks for the update and good that you have been able to narrow down the issue. So this was not introduced by the changes we made to the 3d print/save as mesh command. Since I did not see any other reports on the issue it may be isolated to your network. Would you be able to test from a different network?

@lukas.fuhrmann The problem repeats on my local ethernet and wifi as well as wifi tethered through a cell phone (a completely separate network).

Have you tried going to the service utility and running the network diagnostics?

That said, on both of my PCs the diagnostic tool gets stuck at this point!

After quite a while it did complete with this error. As I have no problems think I'll just ignore it.

@lukas.fuhrmann Well bad news, I just tried to save while in Offline mode and it crashed again, so I'm not really sure what's going on anymore.

Almost the same problem for me, Fusion crashes/locks up when I export to Cura via the 3D-print/Manufacturing function. Both online and offline.

Does this also happen, when you are trying to export without sending to a print utility? Also if you try to export through File-> Export ?
