I have an idea for something fun. I am getting started learning to set up machine building, and I was wondering if it is possible to walk around the inside of my house with a camera and take pictures of the entire house and convert the pictures to CAD files and build my machine using the entire inside of my house right down to every detail, even the pictures that are hanging on the wall, and furniture and even me sitting at my desk in my shop and be able to see my machine simulating a part being machined? it sounds kind of crazy to want to have something so elaborate as to make up an entire shop including the inside of the house, but it also sounds fun, and would be a fun project to complete with my son. I would love to have anyone's opinion of this idea and any ideas of what could be done to accomplish it with ease like just simply taking pictures and that's it. thanks to all.

Possible, yes!

You can scan a room with the lidar of a recent iPhone and get a point cloud that you might be able to use in a Meshmodeler such as Blender. Obviously there is (much) mode expensive equipment available handling this with more precision, but also requiring much more sophisticated computer hardware and software to handle all the data.

There difficulty is getting this into a useful format for a CAD software. CAD software does NOT represent 3D geometry in form of meshes, but as BRep/NURBS.

The scan data for an entire house will likely be too much for Fusion 360. At best you might be able to use it as a visual reference for modeling things.

I'd look for a simpler project to work on with your son!

Edit: To my knowledge there is no direct way to convert pictures directly into CAD geometry. Definitely not in Fusion 360. If you really want to manually model everything in your house and use pictures as a reference, that of course is possible. Depending on your skills and desired level of detail, you'll be busy for a long time 😉

yeah I've seen some pretty cool architecture scanners that scan an entire house. here is what I have settled on, I just want to draw up my little hobby shop room starting by measuring length, width, and height. I have the walls covered with bulletin boards so I plan to draw them up so that it has some dimension to it, then take pictures of the papers and things hanging on them, and use decal to have them plastered on the bulletin boards. then I was thinking of importing my computers and big screen monitor and machinist tool box, and other items like the clamp set hanging on the wall, and in my spare time I could decorate the room with more imported items to place in the shop room. it does not seem like too much work to do, and it would be fun. of course; I could try to gut out some of the imported objects so that the assemblies are not so complex as to slow down my computer during simulation. just having the shop in 3d with both machines in it would be fun to trip out my friends just for laughs. I enjoy trying new things and drawing and it seems relaxing to have something to play with. better then playing solitaire. I am doing fun projects right now like finishing up my ATC turret for my lathe, and I already have the entire lathe drawn up because I built it, and drew it all up as I went along.
