Random faces being selected while adding appearance

I'm having issue where I'll be dragging materials onto different faces to change the appearance and then suddenly fusion just selects random faces all over the design which I cant unselect without clicking them all individually or having to close and reopen the appearance menu every time. It's happening constantly and makes changing appearances a lot harder than it should be so any help would be great thanks.
