Paste as new not working

Anonymous
Not applicable

This has worked many times before, but for some reason, it's not working anymore. I select the component I want to copy, right click, copy, and then try to past as new. My new component briefly appears, then it disappears and I get an empty move/copy dialog.

Any ideas what's going on?

There's a video of it here: https://autode.sk/3jbX6b9  (when I try to embed it the forum says it's invalid html)

Hey @Anonymous

Most likely there is an issue with the timeline. Try running a compute all (modify -> compute all) before the paste new.

This error in particular from your screencast is flagging that for me:

I tried that Compute All, but it's still behaving the same, warning flash and everything else.

Ok, can you share the file here and I can take a look?

Hi @Anonymous

Thanks for sharing the file.

I ran a compute all and I'm getting a few combine errors in the timeline: this is likely the source of the paste new failure.

Hello,

I'm sorry, I'm new to Fusion 360, so this may be a naïve question. Do I have to do anything to get those errors? They don't pop-up automatically when I run the compute all.

Do you see the timeline events turn red? They should just appear. You might need to scroll to the right in your timeline or activate the problem component.

Ah, yeah, I'm familiar with those, but even after running compute all, they are not happening:

I loaded the f3d, run a compute and I got the errors. It's actually one combine that errors, as soon as you fix that one, the other gets fixed automatically. This is a combine action that is constantly breaking and I don't know why. It just losses the body and some of the tools whenever I do anything. Even after fixing it in the loaded f3d, I still can't copy. It still behaves the same way.

A combine that shares only two faces (rather than overlapping solid) is not going to be very reliable. Adding a small extrusion to add overlapping geometry will greatly improve that.

I have found this topic searching for the same issue. But in my case even exporting f3d file and importing it back didn't show any errors on "Compute all". I even tried to go manualy through each step in the project to recalculate it. Still I am not able to "paste new". Is it possible that something was changed in last year which broke compatibility with older projects? The original project is one year old and I had used Paste new in it multiple times last year.

Hi,

Paste New is a process of elements within an existing design and not an import process.

Please share the file and say which component it is about.

File > export > save as f3d on local drive  > attach it to the next post.

Hello, thank you for your reply.
The import was a way to test, if "Compute all" will show any errors in the document. As in history of this thread, the original project was looking OK, but Paste new didn't work. And after importing the project as F3D, the "Compute all" highlighted the step which caused the issue. That is why I tried to reimport the project to test if I can find the wrong step.

I am attaching the project file so you can try to find the issue. If I try to Copy > Paste New any component other than "Base" (which is of different origin), I get the same error.
I believe there are other and better ways to create multiple objects with the same steps and only a different text. This is the only way I figured out when I needed it. And last year it worked well for me.

Hi,

Since the file already depicts elements at the beginning of the timeline that cannot yet exist, I created it from scratch.
Inserting new is now possible without problems and with full functionality.
With new names, one only changes the text in the component (normal/mirrored) and the path angle to adjust the text length.

@g-andresenThank you and sorry for the late response. I was not able to get back to this topic for too long.

As you write, there are some elements missing at the beginning of the timeline. That is what interests me the most, I was not able to identify the missing elements.
But I know that the project was 2 years old when I returned to it and maybe I had started with some imported base models which I deleted later... I don't know and I cannot fing it even in old versions.

For future, I know I have to take care to not break my timeline.
