Parts list - group unique components / Help on design process to best achive parts list

Hi Guys

I'm having issues understanding how to best use the parts list for my purpose.  I'm a shed designer and builder, so in my design, I have many of the same "part" but has been altered to fit the design.  So, as a quick example, I have four 4x2 posts, which has been altered so are all unique, but when I go to buy I would buy four 4x2 posts.  Regardless of what I have done with the 4x2 posts, they are still the same part that I want to buy, and would be very useful to have in my drawings

The problem I see is...

1. If I have the original 4x2 post and copy "paste new" so I can edit in my design, it will appear on my parts list as individual parts which aren't true

2. If I have the original 4x2 post and cope paste, it will appear as the same part in my parts list, but then if I alter any of the parts, it is copied onto the original design which is no good

Am I missing something, or is the parts list in 360 simply not going to work for me?

Many Thanks - James

Hi,

Good question. I'm sort of curious what you want the parts list to show. Here's why:

If the components are different geometrically, they are unique components. Paste new is a good choice. In a manufacturing sense, these would have different part numbers since they are a different shape.

But it sounds like you want some kind of common parts list property for each of these unique components. That property would be related to the raw material of the parts. Just like a steel part might be made from 16 GA sheet metal, your parts are made from 2x4 stock.

Have you tried adding properties to the components so you can see it in the drawing? Like this:

I believe what the OP wants is basically a cut list, which is not the same as a parts list. It is list of components in an intermediate state between the raw material and final geometry as assembled.

I am currently also at a loss for a good workaround.

Thanks @TrippyLighting.

If @rticr you want a cut list, this add-in does that.

Thanks, Both

Yes - a cuts list would be great.  Seems like I will just have to wait; for now I will just use copy/ paste and single out modified items
