New laptop, models open in browser and not in app

I have succesfully worked with Fusion 360 on my desktop. To be more mobile I bought a new laptop with a dedicated graphics card.

When I open a design it opens in my browser (Chrome), instead of the app. I have not found this behavior on the forum. What is going on here?

I can start a new design perfectly fine, so it doesn't seem to be a hardware issue.

The Laptop is a HP Pavilion x360 core i5 with NVIDIA geforce 940 MX. See the Graphic Diagnostic below:

[GPU Information]
GPU Device: NVIDIA GeForce 940MX
GPU RAM: 2048 MB
GPU Driver API: DirectX 11.0
GPU Driver Version: w\S.ystem32\DriverStore\FileRepository\nvhm.inf_amd64_f0b2a5e1e71031b3\nvldumdx.dll,C:\windows\System32\DriverStore\Fil:22.21.13.8569
GPU Driver Date: Unknown

[Graphics Effects Settings]
Anti Aliasing: On
Ambient Occlusion: On
Object Shadow: Off
Ground Shadow: On
Ground Reflection: Off
Selection Display Style: Normal
Transparency Effect: Better Performance

[Limit effects to optimize performance]
Off

Troubleshooting:

clean install

manual uninstall

clean install

update drivers with Driver Booster

set Fusion as high-perfomance NVIDIA processor in the NVIDIA config

Please help. I hate to return this laptop, as I believe from researching the technical requierements it should run just fine.

Hi @Anonymous,

Welcome to the Fusion 360 Community!

Most of the time when this happens, this is because the file format is not supported with Fusion 360 (therefore it opens on a Viewer in Fusion 360), or that the file has not yet been converted to a Fusion file for use.

Can you just comment on the file type that you are trying to open as well as how you uploaded the file to Fusion?

Thanks,

Hello James,

thank you for your answer. You were spot on with the file type. I did something stupid. I made a jpg screenshot of the design, which looks the same as the preview of the design itself. Therefore I tried to open a jpg file, which indeed opened in de browser.

The proper fusion file opened just fine.

thanks,

Michael

Hi @Anonymous,

Do you have a personal license?

If so then your issue lies with that personal licenses don't include translation for professional file formats such as the .sldprt . Instead convert to a neutral STEP file and import that instead.

Here's a list of what files types you can import as a personal license holder : https://knowledge.autodesk.com/support/fusion-360/learn-explore/caas/sfdcarticles/sfdcarticles/Fusion-360-Free-License-Changes.html

This webpage lists Fusion 360 supported file types and .dae is not one of them.
