Navigation Gestures Breaking with Two Input Devices Connected

I'm using both mouse and trackpad on Mac.

The gestures for panning, zooming and rotating keep completely breaking on the trackpad.

At the moment I can't pan or rotate at all with the trackpad, unless I first click the pan or orbit buttons at the bottom of the window.

When the trackpad gestures break, Pinch to zoom stops working, the pan gesture zooms instead of panning and holding shift stops any gesture from working at all.

Really the whole system needs not only fixing but also needs proper customization options. What I would really like is for the trackpad to just rotate with one finger, zoom with two and pan with three and to use the mouse in the other hand to do the main driving, selecting tools, sketching, selecting faces etc.

Dividing the input controls between two hands like this is great for ergonomics. Having both mouse and trackpad connected should not break the essential controls of an application.
