Moving copied component won't move its sketch

I have created a few components, and then copied one of them and did "Paste as new" to make a copy of it. When I edit the sketch for this copy, the edits only get applied to the copy, which is the expected behavior. But when I am in sketch editing mode (for the copied component), the position of the component jumps to the position of the component from which I made the copy. After I click "Finish sketch" it jumps back into its original position.

See attached picture for better clarification.

So when I "Past as new" a component, and then move it, how do make sure the sketches inside of it  move as well?

Thanks

You can see in the browser that the sketch was copied also.  In the screen capture below, Component 2 was Pasted as New from a copy of Component 1.  You can see the Sketch in the browser for each and if I highlight each one I can see it is a part of the correct component.  If you edit the sketch of the Pasted as New component, it will jump back to the original sketch coordinates as it was originally created on.  This may make you think it is not a separate sketch.  Edit it to make it different, you will see.

The sketch of the copy is separate that is not the problem, I can edit it without any issues. I just don't want it to jump back to the position of that other component when I'm editing it, I want the sketch to remain at the same position where the model extruded from that sketch is placed.

Not going to happen.  You need to use a different workflow if you want this.  Use Save Copy As, then place it back into your assembly and break the link if you would like.

I understand that this topic has been discussed a few times.

  1. I still don't see an answer to "why is this happening?" with the workflow being discussed.
    Can you elaborate?

  2. Here's a detail left out:
Now that the pasted as new component has been moved, look at that sketch (don't edit). That sketch is in the intended location; where ever that pasted as new component was moved.

Now, if you edit the sketch in the pasted as new component. The screen will show the sketch in the orginal (unmoved location). Why is that?

we need a bit more information.  This thread is over a year old.  We need your model to be able to explain.  But, some things to know:

  • If you are moving a body, the sketch will not move with it
  • if you are moving a component, and the sketch is not owned by the component, the sketch will not move with it
  • edit sketch will roll back your timeline to the point in time when the sketch was created.  If a Move happens in the timeline after that sketch, its effect will be undone temporarily by the edit sketch.

Thanks for accommodating!
Yes, I understand why now. Attaching my screencast to reinforce your statements

Your Screencast did not make it.  Maybe it would be better to just reference the URL.
