motion links do not work / assembly

Anonymous
Not applicable

I have created and sometimes imported models (step) that I want to assemble (bottom up / assembly) into a template. I am trying to create a Machine haptics template that I can call up for my CAM generation.  Essentially , a working DOF model of my Tormach with my tooling plate, vises, clamps etc..

The problem that I am having revolves around the motion links and joints that I create in the individual models before building my template machine assemblies).

The motion links and joint seem to be available (visible) in the drop down under each model that I import.

The joints and motion links do not function even though they are available.  How can i toggle these on or what is the best practice?

Thanks in advance

Steven

Is it possible for you to attach your model for the forum users to troubleshoot your issue?  Open model, go to File menu, Export to your hard drive then attach it to a forum post using the Attachments section below.

If the bottom up components are linked, the work inside them mostly read only. Joints are an exception. (edited)

Phil,Thanks for the help. If I understand you, I need to edit in place all of the models that are in my template and redo the joints and motion links.
Is there a way to copy and paste these?
Any chance you could screencast an example.
Thanks again for your time.

My apologies. I was mistaken about motion links. They function in bottom up assemblies like all other joints. So something else is going on.

Can you share a model or screencast video that shows what you are seeing, what you describe not functioning?

It's not clear what you are trying to show, sorry. Can you describe what you are expecting to happen? This is my interpretation of the video:

  • The model opens, you try to drag the vice screw.
  • I'm assuming this is expected to turn and the vice is expected to open.

After that it's a bit of a jumble. Turning off/on visibility of joints, or editing joint limits, these do not trigger motion link relationships.

I also notice a number of rigid groups in one of the assemblies. Is it possible the vice is part of a rigid group? Items in rigid groups will still show the joint motion when you animate during edit joint limits.

Thanks,

I was able to model and apply joints and motion links to the vise.  They function properly in the model.  I do expect the vise jaws to open when I turn the handle.  And it does in the model.  The problem is that when I open the vise model in context with the Tormach mill, the motion links stops working.  I have gone through the joints to see if I accidentally added a joint in the assembly that would stop the vises motion link.

If I animate the joints individually, they work.

Should I have added the joints and motion links in the assembly (tormach/tooling plate/vise/clamps) rather than in the individual models?

Screencasts take a lot of time before they show up in my dashboard.

On a different note, Is it possible to have my cam simulation drive the tormach mills spindle and axis (x,y,z)?

I would like to visualize my mills motion along with my g-code.

I pulled a few components into a new assembly to get away from a lot of your overhead.  You have a lot of it and the model takes forever to update when originally opened.  I will not guarantee the components are in the right place but I just wanted to get the motions of the X and y axis tables to move and the vise.  Right now they are all independent and you can drive them by Animating the labeled Joints.  You can add Motion Links as desire to between these joints.

The answer to your question about having the CAM Simulation drive your model, NO, you cannot do it within Fusion 360.  Model is attached.

Thank you for the model update

Regarding the joints not working in the assembly, I found the problem.

I had some how created a ridged link at the top level  This drove me crazy because I thought I had tried turning off ach joint in an attempt to find the problem.
