Mac Trackpad Zooming (control+two-finger-gesture) Delayed after Panning/Orbiting

Hey there,

I notice the following behaviour:

  • zoom (control+two-finger-gesture, not pinch gesture) is delayed after panning (two-finger-gesture) or after orbit (shift+two-finger-gesture) operation.
  • Once the zoom starts to take effect there is no dealy even for consecutive zooming operations.
  • As soon as I use another operation (panning or orbiting) and wanting to use zoom again, it is again delayed.

I followed troubleshooting from the following guide but native trackpad and restarting Fusion did not resolve the issue: How-to-improve-trackpad-modelling-for-Fusion-360

Version:

Fusion 360 2.0.15050 x86_64 [Rosetta 2]
macOS 11.6 (20G165) on MacBookAir10,1 (M1)

Thanks,

Phil

Thanks for posting. I'd like to investigate this, but I need to get a better idea of what you mean by "delayed". Can you make a video showing the delay, or try to estimate it?

Hey @Phil.E

Thanks for looking into this. I made a video with my phone so you can see my finge movements. It's not happening every time, but most of the time. It's actually quite annoying and feels like I am working on C64 😉

Thanks for the video.

What I see is you using a combination of gestures (control + two finger) that is unknown to me, not supported by Fusion, and not found in macOS trackpad settings.

Supported zooming: two finger pinch.

Can you please try two finger pinch zooming, let me know how it goes. Also, if you can explain how you are using control and two finger swipe to zoom, it will help the testing.

Pinching works, but I found that it always zooms from the center of the workspace, which in some cases is useful. Using the control+two-finger-swipe zooms from the mouse pointer as reference, which i find much more useful, as I can simply move the mouse to the part I want to zoom in on.

When I installed Fusion, I simply tried out all the modifiers (shift, control, option, command) and it simply did that. I have not changed anything in neither mac trackpad setting nor in Fusion. So it is strange that it is not supported as it does work for me. My only explanation would be, the two-finger-swipe is interpreted as mouse movement maybe?

Thanks for the info.

I'll test around this again by turning off native trackpad, and turning off trackpad in general. If I cannot reproduce it, and it's not supported, unfortunately that means I have no case to log. Developers cannot fix what cannot be reproduced or supported by Fusion. Sorry to bring this news.

Hey @Phil.E

Thanks for your feedback, I am a developer myself so I understand.

I made some screenshots of my trackpad settings in MacOS, find them below...

I actually activated Native Trackpad in Fusion before, but my Fusion just crashed so I think the setting was reset automatically. But I could use the control+two-finger-swipe to zoom with or without this option activated.

Thanks for the images.

One thing, in the trackpad settings I don't see shift+two finger swipe listed as a zoom option. Is that supported by macOS generally, or is it only in Fusion 360?

Hey there. It is just in Fusion 360. For example in a web brwoser this does not work to zoom. So I thought this must actually be a Fusion feature... I guess "it's not a bug, it's a feature" 🙂 And as I said, I prefer this way of zooming, only if there was not this lag... Maybe you can make this an official feature in a future release?

I also just noticed, that command + two-finger-swipe does the same like control + two-finger-swipe, with the same lag...

it is not shift + two-finger-swipe, that one does orbit...

I hate to throw cold water on your idea, but it is highly unlikely that an accidental gesture would become supported when you might be the only customer who has accidentally discovered it.
