Is there a way to add a "fake" weight to a complex component without modeling all the internal details?

I have an assembly made with several components purchased from suppliers.  I can weight the actual parts to find their mass, and I can model the exterior dimensions, but how do I create a fake weight (mass) for the component?

The only way to do that today is to create a custom physical material.  Model the outer case, check its mass properties, and create a physical material with a density that is the desired mass/modeled outer case volume.

Thank you for the information.  That was actually what I was doing already, but I was hoping for a more clever solution.
