Is it possible to hollow a coil?

Is it possible to hollow a coil or draw a "coil shape" path for a pipe extrusion to follow?

Have you tried Shell? Select both end faces then enter an offset. Note if you need to add faces to a selection after entering an offset you need to hold the Ctrl key down to suppress the offset.

This didn't yield the desired result for me. Instead, to hollow out the entire coil, resulting in a helical tube, switch to surface mode, delete the end faces, switch back to solids, and thicken the wall of the coil.
