Inserting DXF files into Fusion 360

Hi.

I am having trouble inserting a DXF file into Fusion 360. I have used the <Insert DXF> command and selected the plane and the DXF file but nothing happens. All I am left with is a message next to my cursor that reads 'Select a plane or planar face.' I have done this with multiple DXF files and the same happens every time.

Please help.

Check that the selection filters have all been ticked.

What's in the DXF file, is it just curves? Have you got an example you can share, you might need to ZIP it to upload.

As I asked above, what's in the file, is it just lines and curves? Insert can't handle surfaces or meshes. Have you got a DXF you can share here, you will need to ZIP it to attach.

Also is the file a converted bitmap or something like that that might have several thousand lines, files like this will not work well and might take ages to import. Only other thought is some splines from other CAD will not import.

Thanks Mark. The problem was it being a surface.

Does anyone know how to insert a dxf when using the online version of Fusion. There is no option for insert dxf in the insert tab?

@cameron.embry The online version is running on a virtual desktop, so has no access to your local drives. The only workaround for DXF would be to upload it to your hub from a browser (not Fusion's data panel). Then after upload you'll have the option to Create Fusion Design. Depending on what program made the DXF and if it set the document units correctly, the translator might see the DXF as unitless and use CM as the default units.

Thanks that worked which is awesome. Next question now though, I have worked on the file and now want to save the file as a dxf to then use on a laser cutter. When I go to save the dxf, it wont allow me to select anywhere to save it to?

What is in the Fusion design? Is it just curves or have you created any surfaces\solids? If all you have is curves, just save the design then from your hub you have the option to export and a list of file types. Not sure if the export units will be the same as the design or in CM. The online translators don't know your preferences and default to CM for some import\exports.
