Importing Solidworks assembly with internal parts fails

Anonymous
Not applicable

I'm trying to import a .sldasm file from https://grabcad.com/library/250mm-silver-pneumatic-stay-1

(also attached)

When I click "Upload", I get the error "Please select required reference parts and sub-assemblies".

However, all the parts are defined internally to the assembly - there are no 'sldprt' files.

I don't have Solidworks to check, but grabcad's preview and the Solidworks eDrawings viewer work just fine - see below (and it shows that the components are internal)

Could the error message be more descriptive, or the list of "missing" references be made available somewhere?

Hi @Anonymous

I'm not sure why that's not able to upload through the regular upload. I was able to get it to work by uploading it through A360.

Let me know if that works for you.

Looks like, according to this lovely grabcad contributor, others may have been having issues with it too.

Thanks for the suggestion. 🙂

Uploading through A360 seemed like a simple win, but...

  1. A360 stores the file as "Solidworks assembly file" not "Fusion Design".
  2. In the Fusion 360 application's data panel you can see the file, but double-clicking on it opens the file in the browser 3D viewer, not the application.
  3. You can right-click on the file and select "Create Fusion Design", but for me it sat for about 10 minutes with the "progress" bar slowly filling, then failed.

So that's not really working either - at least it's consistent... 😞

(I really wish Fusion 360's errors had more detail!)

Hi @Anonymous

That's strange, I'm able to open it and edit in Fusion (app). I am also able to make a Fusion file pretty easily.

Can you attach your log files here? That way I can poke around and see if the translator is timing out the request.

Strange, I was able to run the converter fine this morning.

Still not sure why the Fusion importer fails though, but A360 importer + conversion is a workaround for now.

I'll call it "solved" for now given the workaround.

But the importer seems to have a bug?

@offshorejhlee

Do you have the *.sldprt files (an assembly *.sldasm must, of course, include parts).

Can you zip and Attach the entire assembly here for testing?  (For this particular download the parts are internal as indicated in the discussion thread title, it appears that there is also *.f3d file for download.)

Do you have a paid subscription to Fusion 360, or are you running a free license of Fusion?

It is 2024 and this issue persists.  The workaround is to upload in the web browser and then open in F360.  This should have been fixed by now...

@superalpha

Do you have this issue with this exact design, or a different one? If it's different, can you share the design? That would help us to know if it was an issue with the swx export or the fusion importer.

Cheers,

Karina
