Importing .dxf's / Contour selections

Importing .dxf's / Contour selections

Not applicable

I've been using Fusion 360 for about a year now. I'm having issues getting the start up license and so I'm temporarily using the free trial. It does NOT work. I've uninstalled and reinstalled and I'm still having the same issues. When I import my .dxf file, it comes in backwards and upside down. If I mirror it, I can't delete the original without it freezing up. I've tested other files and once I extrude and go to manufacture I can't select any contours. It highlights individual segments rather than the whole area.

I have never had these issues before.

Are you using insert DXF from the insert menu or uploading through the data panel? You might have more luck with insert DXF. Also do you have Fusion set to Z up in preferences?

I've not seen any of the problems you're seeing, can you share a DXF file that's a problem for you.

Thanks Mark

Same situation here as well, I have found no rhyme or reason why this is a thing?

@terry_fusion  If you use the XY plane I think it's correct. The positive\negative directions for the YZ and XZ are a bit of a mystery! @jeff_strater Is there a rule for the directions for the XZ and YZ planes?

Here's the import on the XY plane, think this is correct. @terry_fusion  Can you paste images into the message next time please, the viewer will not let you look a 2 pictures at the same time!

Yes, that is the correct orientation, thanks for the assist.

I am going to have to experiment further myself.

It seems odd that there is only one plane that it will import correctly on.

Thanks again.

I have no idea about selecting contours, or why that CAM function would not select a closed loop no matter the direction.  However, if you are asking about the differences in sketch coordinate systems on different origin planes, this should explain it:  why-is-my-sketch-text-appearing-upside-down .  It all has to do with right-handed coordinate systems, and the need to have the normals for each origin plane point in the "same" direction.  FWIW, this effect is not a problem in "Y-up" orientation.

DXF is exported in a local coordinate system, so when inserted, it will obey that plane's coordinate system.  This can appear "upside down and backwards", but that depends on how you look at the sketch.  From the point of view of the sketch's coordinate system, it is correct.

"If I mirror it, I can't delete the original without it freezing up."  See the screencast below.  If you do need to mirror it (and I'm not convinced that is the case), if you delete the symmetry constraints first, you should be able to delete the original without any problem.  Also, you can rotate the sketch into the correct orientation, I think, and skip the mirror entirely, which is the second half of the screencast.

@jeff_strater Thanks for the link. I guess if you have the grid visible the scale does give you the correct orientation of of the positive directions. Below is the XZ plane and it shows the sketch's Y positive direction is down.

Any idea why the display of the scale flips when I zoom in and starts showing the numbers on the negative side for the X axis?

Thanks Mark
