I can't open most of my files

For last couple of weeks I can't open some of my projects that worked fine earlier. Even when opening succeeded i can't perform any action - sketch, CAM, anything, Fusion crashed. Brand new projects only work for short period of time, then crashing, no matter what platform I'm using (MacBook Pro 2018 & Windows machines). My projects are rather simple, I'm working with only few elements at a time, simple 2D CAM operations, drilling, pockets & contours - see screenshot. Fusion has been reinstalled multiple times and it brings nothing.

Any ideas? I'm counting on Your help!

Best regards,

Jakub

Hi @jakubHX639,

thanks for posting! I am sorry to hear about the inconveniences. The crash reports you have been sending to us seem to be specific to your Mac machine at the first look.

I would like to ask you for the following to troubleshoot the issue:

  1. Share a link to a sample Fusion 360 assembly and describe the workflow that leads to a crash (see: How to share a Fusion 360 design)
  2. Collect and send us your Fusion 360 Diagnostic Log Files (either by attaching them here or by uploading them to a project and sharing the link, like in the step above)
  3. List your system specifications (OS version, graphics card, etc., see also: System requirements for Autodesk Fusion 360)

Thanks in advance!

Hi Paweł,

thank You for fast respond.

It seems all files incorporated parts from attached link have issue with opening and editing. It happened once I've tried to open it in the morning few weeks ago. Since then I've tried multiple solutions, eg. copy small number of elements to a new file and edit them separately or reinstallation of Fusion 360 with Cleaner Tool.

My Mac is up to date, see spec attached below.

https://a360.co/2F9Gpuk - example of file I can't open - when I try to open it Mac is going crazy (CPU and RAM usage, power consumption).

Is it possible, that that specific geometry created the problem? I've been working with similar geometry for a while, no major issue until now 😞

Regards,

Jakub

another corrupted file - I've just made those parts from scratch today once again. Sketching ok, bodies extrusion ok. Then CAM, drilling ok, 2D pocket ok, 2D contour ok. Then finishing contour, the same tool as for operation before, same passes... no response.
I Restarted Fusion several times, can't open file saved after first CAM contour, software freezes till forced shut down.

Hi @jakubHX639,

thanks for sharing the files! I am trying to reproduce the behavior on Windows 10 (I will try this on a Mac tomorrow). Curiously enough, I am able to open the first design seamlessly, but the other one (larmo lite 01.f3d) freezes at Loading CAM data References.

I am submitting the log files to our developers . As mentioned, your crash reports do not seem to be linked to any known issue.

I was also wondering:

Thanks!

Hi!

Yes, I can view designs on my hub, after Chrome installation. But not much can do here.

I've promoted (larmo lite 01.f3d) v06 to v11 and open it successfully, but testing led me to the exactly same moment as last time, the second, finishing 2D CAM contour.
Interesting is that operation is not particularly specific, neither complicated, simple 2D contour machined with 12mm flat end mill, two finishing passes with specified leads in and out.

Tried how it bahavior on Windows 10 machine, situation is the same, can open first file, but any atempt to edit (eg sketch a line) has fail.
Second file can not be opened at all, as on Mac.

I'm starting to believe here is a math that might overcooked most of workstations... 😞

Thank You for your support,
regards,
Jakub

thanks, @jakubHX639 - this is very valuable information.  If possible, could you share the version of this design which opens OK, and a description (screencast would be great) of the operations in CAM (the 2D contour), which causes the design to fail to load?  This will be immensely helpful to us in diagnosing the problem.  Thank you.  We appreciate the effort.

Hello Jeff,

Here is the project saved just before the unfortunate move:
https://a360.co/2Tzw2Dk
And attached screencast, with all CAM operations, at 3:50 mentioned 2D contour is begining. After inputing settings and confirmation them by ok button I see rainbow umbrella.
I had to short the movie and forced Fusion shut down because Fusion freezing leads to freezes ScreenCast 😕

BTW: I noticed, that project saved just before fatal operation and then closed, cannot be open again.

With grattitude,
Jakub

thanks, @jakubHX639, I can reproduce the corruption.  It is definitely related to the 2D contour.  Thanks for taking the time to record the video.

Jeff,

I've been working with those profile for some time now, never had major problem with it, untill some weeks ago it's started to fall apart.

There's a picture of parts that i made 4 weeks ago with identical geometry and tool path.
Now i can not entered any changes or generate CAM or post processing it.

I think the issue started after one of the last Fusion update.

this is also very helpful information.  It is certainly possible that some bug was introduced in 2D Contours recently.  We are looking into this with a high priority.  We'll get back to you when we know more.

@jakubHX639, we have not resolved this problem yet.  However, we've narrowed it down to this Base Feature, which introduces this body into the design:

2019-01-09_16-47-01.png

There is something very wrong with that body.  Most of it is internal stuff, but if you have information about where this body came from or have it lying around in a different design, that would be helpful.

If you go back in the timeline to before this feature, everything seems OK.  But, single-stepping over this Base Feature, the Copy Body after it, and the Move Body after that will be very slow.  It also explains why this design is so slow to load (it is very large for the geometry and number of bodies in it).

Sorry not to have better news, but we haven't forgotten you

Hi Jeff,

It is practically impossible for me to find original design this body come from, I have various versions of it in designs from last couple of months, and it seems I cannot open most of them.

However:
I've moved back to the design from 14 October 2018, copying one of the first made bodies in that shape, and made a new design with it. After made changes and fit it to desired shape I can modify and CAM it without any issue:
https://a360.co/2FmBLIB
https://a360.co/2D2FglZ

Yet, there were other profile that generated too much calculations and taking some time with opening and editing.
I've extruded new body from that profile and create a new project with it. Again, after that operation everything seems to be working fine. In fact, it's working amazingly fast :-):

original file: https://a360.co/2D1lK9G
recent version: https://a360.co/2D1tjNo

Seems like the problem is solved, but still do not know where it came from, or what to do for avoid it in the future.

If there is anything else I can do to identify the nature of the error, let me know, please.

Thank You & Best Regards,

Jakub

thanks, @jakubHX639, glad you got it working again.  We've done some investigation into the file, and have some theories about what the problem is.  It seems to be related to the way that Fusion stores some design information.  Specifically, when faces are "merged".  So, if two co-planar faces are joined, usually with a Combine feature, all of that internal information from both faces are combined.  And, in the case of some of the bodies in this design, that set of information is very, very large.  To the point where trying to process it hangs Fusion.  This is clearly a problem with Fusion that we will look into fixing.  However, there are ways that you can change your design methods a bit to avoid this problem until we are able to fix this.  We noticed when we looked at your timeline that there are a few cases where there is a sequence of features that result in this kind of face merging.  This sequence, for instance (I added the timeline group just for my own use):

Screen Shot 2019-01-12 at 7.59.45 PM.png

Just before the final Combine in that sequence, you can see that 4 bodies exist that share a lot of faces in common:

Screen Shot 2019-01-12 at 8.51.33 PM.png

and in one case, there is a lot of common faces between two bodies:

Screen Shot 2019-01-12 at 8.55.37 PM.png

These shapes are pretty simple, I'd recommend considering using an outline sketch + Extrude, if that's possible.  I understand that it's a workaround, but it might help avoid this problem in the future.

Jeff,

This explains a lot and will help to avoid similar errors in the future.
I tested my other projects with processing problems and it seems to me that, in most cases, merged bodies cause slowdown or Fusion360 failure.
Now it's no problem for me to change the way i make/modify bodies.

Thank You very much and Best Regards,
Jakub

Has this issue been resolved in the latest updates? We have a similar issue where file is corrupted and doesn't open. We can't even view the file in Fusion TEAM Hub in web browser.
