How to duplicate a project? ITEM_COPY_FAILED

Hey,

how do I duplicate an entire project?

I want to try out some new ideas but don´t want to screw my current project. 

Since branching has been disabled how do I do that properly?

I tried to do it manually, I went into my hub and created a new empty project. Then I went into the project I want to be copied, selected all files and clicked the copy icon. I get asked where to copy to and I choose the new project. After that I get the ITEM_COPY_FAILED message at the top.

If I go into the project I copied to, all the files are there exept one. Might it be because the missing file thats causing the error is my "assembly" file? I created all components seperatly in single files and assembled in this one file (not a fan of top down approach).

Hi @Anonymous,

Thank you for posting! It's not possible to copy a design that has external reference (another design/drawing) to another project and that is the current limitation.

Does your assembly design have a link in it? Or have you inserted external design to it, saved as a new version, then deleted a link? If so, that's the cause of the issue here.

The only workaround in this case is to download a copy of the assembly design, and then upload it to the new project.

Yes, it has links in it. Links to all the single parts the assembly consists of. All the single parts were created in Fusion by myself.

I copied all the parts that are linked in the assembly file along with the assembly itself from the beginning of trying to duplicate the project. I thought this way there wouldnt be any issues and it was necessary all along because the changes I want to try out are in the single parts, it would be just nice to immidiatly see the assembly with those changed parts. 

I´ll try the down and upload tomorrow. How will the down and upload affect the links in the copied assembly file? Will they be linked to the files in the original project or in the new one?

Hi @Anonymous,

Thank you for your response! A copied assembly file (F3Z) will not be linked to the original design, and any changes you make to the copied file won't affect the original. They are completely separate but the designs' name will be the same and it's a bit confusing if you upload it to the project/folder where the original is located, so I recommend creating a new project/folder for a copied assembly.

Why can't we just duplicate entire projects? The file moving capabilities are a very frustrating part of working with fusion.
