How do I rotate & copy a sketch around a point

I'm a bit new and I believe I'm missing some key points here. I want to rotate this rectangle around the center point and copy it to create a pattern similar to the second & third images.

I have tried to select the edges of the rectangle and use the Move/copy tool, but when I select the pivot point and try to rotate it, it doesn't have any affect.

It looks like you used "Set Pivot" to change the pivot point, but never clicked on the check box to end Set Pivot mode.  I just did the same thing trying this out, so don't feel bad.  I always forget to exit Set Pivot Mode the first time...
