How can I make a cable drum with inner diameter consisting of thread and the outer one having no face?

I was thinking of doing it a couple ways:

- having an inner one with just thread then another cylinder that would have flared ends since I wouldn't need the rest of the outer cylinder other than the ends.

- making an offset plane on each end of the inner cylinder faces and then creating the flared ends from there. But that doesn't seem to evenly match with the threaded cylinder.IMG_6936.jpg

Pictures of what you are describing would be very helpful. Thanks!

I would use a Coil, not a Thread.

(Is it really a helical path in the drum, or is it merely parallel paths?)

I would fully define my geometry at the Origin rather than leaving hanging in space.

I would not start as a Sheet Metal component.

What is the radius of the cable that will go across this?

What is the Pitch of the Helix? (Is it really 1/12  or 0.083 in)?

The radius that the cable would go off of would be 2.75 inches. The outer diameter is about 3.25 inches. The pinch is closer to 0.083 in. If I do the helical path, then how can I make the difference in diameter so that the outer edge of the bigger diameter is prominent but the inner diameter is just the helical path?

Bump.

Just moving this one back to the top so that it doesn't get forgotten.

(You should have posted >>over here<< instead.)

You can just add flat ends to the grooved drum, no need for two cylinders. To make the groove I swept a surface which I used to split the face of the drum then swept the groove profile along the split surface.

Thank you for this! I have lots to learn, didn't even know what sweeping was until you mentioned it.
