How can I assign both a sliding and rotational joint to the same component without it locking all motion afterwards?

I have been attempting to build a model of an engaging clutch using rotating and sliding joints on the components. I need one component to rotate and slide, but when I apply the second joint (it doesn't matter what order I assign them) it locks the component in place and it can no longer be dragged  or driven through the joint drive dialogue option. Is there a solution for this out there somewhere?

Does a Cylindrical Joint not work for you?  It allows translation and rotation about the same axis.  Maybe more information would help us answer.

The cylindrical joint got me started in the right direction. Thank you.
