Hobbyist want to convert Mesh to Prismatic Solid Body

Hi all,

Very new user here just trying to get into the 3D Printing / Additive Manufacturing hobby.

I am looking to import meshes or STLs from other files, and potentially from scans.

The imports are working fine, but when I try to convert the mesh to a solid body, the prismatic option is locked out unless you pay for the subscription.

As I'm new to the hobby, and certainly not profiting from it, $70/month is a large expense for me.

However, converting using the faceted option that is allowed in the free Fusion license leaves me with a body full of triangles and facets as imported. I am finding working with the finished import almost impossible.

Is there any other way to make this conversion into a normal smooth body, or is there some other cheaper version or one time fee that can get me this prismatic functionality?

Any and all help much appreciated.

Probably not, but with the model the Forum users can tell more.  Please attach either your STL file or the Fusion 360 model.  If you do not know how to attach your Fusion 360 model follow these easy steps. Open the model in Fusion 360, select the File menu, then Export and save as a F3D or F3Z file to your hard drive. Then use the Attachments section, of a forum post, to attach it.

Thanks for the quick response, John!

I believe I have edited the original post to now include the STL file I am using.

Your model is attached.  It opened as an Imperial (inch) model.

Thanks so much, John!

Is there any way for me to replicate this conversion on my own for future projects, or with the hobbyist license is that not possible?

I used the Convert Mesh command with the Prismatic option.  This option is not available in the Fusion 360 Personal License.  If you have models this simple, it would be very easy simply to model it as a solid body!  For more complex models, you may want to look at other applications.

Edit: Also for some STL files that are very prismatic and regular you may be able to use the process outlined in this Blog Article and Video.

I've a rather complex model I'd like to transform as well. It's a spaceship that I really would like to print in 3D  🙂 Something from my childhood... It's currently transformed in triangles, but I'm facing huge difficulties to split it in pieces and then make it "easier" to print... Also, some details are simply not beatufil anymore...

Would you agree to transform it as well if I send it to you via MP ?

Thanks 🙂

Fusion used to have the WORST mesh to solid solution, before the netapp integration. In those days I found FreeCAD the most robust free solution to get a solid from a mesh. IIRC the steps were "Create shape from mesh" and then "Convert to solid"...

What the paid solutions (pick your poison) including Fusion are features like handling fillets more gracefully. That said, If I'm planning on doing any complex operations on the base converted solid, I still always go through and create a fresh solid from scratch using the converted solid as a reference.

I do not know what you mean by MP?  I will attempt the conversion but no guarantees.  Please post it here or send me a Private Message with an email I can use to request it.
