Graphics Device Unknown

Hi,

Recently I've been running into issues with my gpu (Nvidia MX250) and Fusion 360. It started with Fusion 360 freezing and becoming unresponsive causing the program to crash. I would attempt to restart Fusion 360 and be hit with the warning "The software renderer is being used; it could be due to that the graphics card is not powerful enough or its driver is not installed." I checked graphical diagnostics:

developmentMV8W3_0-1656383976622.png

and see that my GPU device is unknown and Fusion 360 is using onboard graphics, this is also true in Nvidia experience. I uninstalled/reinstalled drivers for my gpu and also reinstalled fusion 360. This initially solved the issue but then Fusion 360 crashes after 5 mins and the issue reoccurs. All my drivers are up to date and I am unsure on what my next steps are.

Thanks

Hi @developmentMV8W3 have you tried the suggestions in this article? Switchable graphics might be the problem.

If that doesn't fix it, feel free to share your log files in this thread.

Cheers,

Karina

Hi @karina.harper,

I've followed those steps you've recommended, unfortunately the issue reoccurred. I've attached the logs, although unsure which specific logs you are looking for. I used DDU to correctly uninstall the gpu driver from the laptop and reinstalled latest drivers, so that doesn't seem to be the issue. Thanks for the help, hopefully the logs can give an insight to the cause as I am unable to determine it.

Hi @developmentMV8W3
To confirm - you used the NVIDIA steps in that article, correct? I think my link highlighted the AMD section for some reason, but I would recommend going through everything in the 'Windows' section (power options) and in the NVIDIA section (run with... when opening Fusion). I'm particularly interested in the 'run with' option and what happens when you select that. Anything?

I had a look through the logs, and while the Fusion side isn't giving me much (I could have sworn it would tell me what GC was being used..), there is an interesting repeating error in the Windows logs related to drivers.  This occurs on 6/29 at 12:53:06

Event[0]:
  Log Name: System

  User Name: NT AUTHORITY\LOCAL SERVICE
  Computer: DESKTOP-O4IKHO5
  Description:
Check the remaining resource budget. Module exceeds resource budget, failed to AllocateFwCps, STATUS = Insufficient system resources exist to complete the API..

And in the Fusion logs, we see this at the exact same time:

So thi sis indicating to me there is a problem with either the graphics card or Fusion running with the correct card (since we're seeing Intel card issues). This thread has a few suggestions, seems it could be related to a particular Dock or Sleep timer.
For now, I'd love to see the results of 'run with' - when you use that, does Fusion launch? Can you access the graphics diagnostic and see what GC is shown there?

Cheers,

Karina

Also - this reddit user mentions turning off Hardware Accelerated GPU Scheduling in Windows. Try that as well.

@developmentMV8W3 from the Windows error report it looks like Fusion is crashing due to a fault with the Nvidia OpenGL driver, which is likely leading to the fallback to software-based rendering. It is not immediately clear what's causing this, but I can speculate based on experience.

Do you have any external video adapters connected? For example, a USB (not Thunderbolt) dock or HDMI/DisplayPort adapter, eGPU, or possibly anything that mentions DisplayLink?

While the missing GPU information could point to an issue with the Nvidia driver itself, it might also point to a conflict with multiple GPUs, including external adapters.

For the Nvidia driver you reinstalled, from where did you source the driver file? e.g. Nvidia, Dell, Windows Update

Which version did you install?

Hi Karina,

Yes, I followed the Nvidia steps and changed Fusion 360.exe to high-performance Nvidia processor only. With regards to the windows options I don't have the option to disable "Nvidia Display Power Saving Technology". I've attempted to run with the high performance processor selected only and still run into the issue. Here is the screenshot of the current graphic diagnostics:

developmentMV8W3_0-1656542974236.png

I've noticed that it gives the correct dedicated memory of the MX 250 Graphics card, for reference when the error occurred GeForce experience also started to fail to detect the gpu device on the laptop:

I also saw that reddit post, Hardware Accelerated GPU Scheduling in Windows was (and still is) turned off but didn't impact the issue.

Hi @lance.carocci,

I am currently not using any external adapters. I am however running a secondary monitor that's connected via HDMI to the laptop, tho there are no adapters as the laptop has a dedicated HDMI port. I sourced the drivers directly from the Nvidia site and currently running version 516.59. This laptop works the intel and nvidia graphics as hybrid, I'm not sure if it's possible but would disabling Intel HD graphics through BIOS be a possible solution?

Just an update, after attempting all suggested ideas, the issue is still present. Currently running Fusion 360 in ultra low graphics mode as a temporary solution.

Hey @developmentMV8W3

I did have one user say that doing a clean install of windows seemed to fix this issue for them. That could indicate a problem with the windows version.

Cheers,

Karina
