Fusion hangs when opening file directly

Basically download an f3d, open it and I get as far as Fusion splash screen. NEver gets any further, task manager shows it's using CPU power to do something, but it doesn't feel like sharing with the audience.

No problem opening Fusion 360 on it's own, but when it's started by opening a file it doesn't want to know. Don't think its file association as it starts the app, but that's as far as it gets.

two things:

  1. does this design open if you start Fusion, then use the Open command to open the file?  My suspicion is that it has nothing to do with binding the file type to Fusion, it is the design itself
  2. how big is this design on disk?  If the design is very large, the open can take a while

if you can share the design here, we can try it on our end.

I'll have a play, I don't have that particular file any more (downloaded from here to help someone out) but I do have other f3ds on my hard drive to try

OK, found some f3ds. Open from the open command within fusion = no problem. Open from file explorer = hang.

screengrab of the hung fusion. Task manager shows 2 instances - the one using 0.1% processor is a window that was already open, the hung instance is the one using 11.5%.

I've also tested with STEP files which I associated with Fusion myself and always used to work fine, and now they are hanging when opened from file explorer too.
