Fusion 360 won't save new file if update is pending

I had some new (untitled) model files I wanted to save but Fusion360 just ignored my save requests. Models I had already saved once & had a file name already would save okay. When I clicked the save icon to save one of the new untitled files it would open the save dialog and allow me to type in a name but when I clicked the SAVE button in the dialog box it just ignored it. If I tried to select a new location when I click the down arrow to open the folder locations it just ignored it. I tried export to .f3d but it would not open the dialog to select a location to save it to. I finally had to close Fusion 360 loosing the work I had done. When I restarted Fusion 360 it started downloading a program update. This is not the first time I have experienced this. There was no warning of the pending update. I am using the personal license and I had only 6 editable documents. It just updated to v2.0.12376. I am using Windows 10 Pro 20H2 x86_64 (19042.1466).

I think F360 should:

1. Give some kind of warning of pending updates

2. Allow the user to save ALL current open projects, not just ones that already have been saved once and already have a name.

Sorry to hear of this experience. It is not reported by other customers that I know of. And Fusion is not designed to block Save ever, unless your license is expired. Do you have an expired license?

So there has to be an explanation for what you are experiencing, but it is not a general issue that we know of, nor is it by design.

Fusion only checks for an update at the beginning of the session. If there is an update it will download it while you work. But if an update becomes available for download, Fusion doesn't know this because checking for update only happens at startup.

If this happens again, gather your Fusion log files and post them to this ticket. Glad to look.

Can you please check what build version of Fusion you are running?

Go to Help > About and tell me what number appears here:

As I said, this has happened before. I would appreciate if you had a look at the attached log files. Thanks.

In answer to your questions:

License was just renewed a couple weeks ago.

Build version now after the update is 2.0.12376

It was a probably 6 months back when it happened before.

Okay well the logs you attached only have events from this week. Did you reinstall lately?

The only issues I see seem related to proxy server. Are you on a network proxy, do you ever have other network related issues?

I haven't re-installed. It just did an update to 2.0.12376 when I restarted it after having this issue...

Proxy would be my Pi-hole server to strip added from web sites. It hasn't given me any issues.

Have you allowed all the Autodesk connections?

I don't believe this was the issue here. I see no evidence that any of the Autodesk related sites were being blocked. I will have to see if it happens again.

Guys... this is still an issue! I have had it happen over and over where all the sudden I can't save ANY open file. Finally had to shut it down and restart... it installs new update and my files are GONE! This last time I shut Fusion rudely with Windows task manager hoping to find a recovery file when restarting but there are no recovery files. Please fix this so when a new update is ready it will allow you to save files! You say Fusion only checks for updates on startup. I have had this happen too many times to believe it! This is really pissing me off! Log files attached.

Hi,

Sorry to hear about continued frustration for you.

I tested the workflow again, and as expected, during an update Fusion can save files. So there is something going on with your particular setup. Have you tried anything to eliminate variables, like turning off your Pi-hole server to see if that makes a difference?

The logs attached also show that when you started Fusion yesterday, it did a check for an update, and then streamed in the update as expected. So it looks like Fusion did what it's supposed to do, with regards to updates.

Please let me know if you narrow down the issue. Maybe the proxy configuration guide for Fusion 360 will help.

Hi Phil

I already have Autodesk whitelisted in Pi-Hole so I am not sure what
that would have to do with not being able to save so just blaming it on
Pi-Hole is not helpful. I lost considerable work this last time so I am
very pissed. I guess what I learn from this is you can't trust Autodesk
with the safety of your files even though Autodesk says it has you
covered with autosave and recovery files. It has let me down with too
many times with this issue. I don't want to save a new version every day
if I have not completed a task because it will just clutter up the
version list but I guess that is what I will have to do. Please come up
with a suitable solution.

Hi,

I'm sorry, I didn't mean to blame your hardware. I'm asking you to try it so we can determine what Fusion needs to do to operate correctly on it. Once we know what exactly to test, then we can make the software conform to that requirement. I'm not promising that we can do this for you, but the first step to solving whatever the problem is here is finding the root cause. You can help by testing variables like with the proxy on/off.

Thanks,

I have already whitelisted Autodesk months ago. Are you wanting me to
turn off Pi-Hole completely until we have gone through numerous update
cycles? That is not something I am prepared to do and shouldn't have to.
Your software should always, at minimum, save its files locally.

No, I meant something more simple. Like the next time this happens try turning off the Pi Hole or temporarily disabling it. Something that would eliminate it as a source of trouble.

Alternately, if it happens again, do you think the advice in this article would help?

I tried export this time when it wasn't saving and it wouldn't do that
either. Just ignored my request.

So today Notification Center actually told me there was an update pending and I should restart Fusion to install the update. I was able to actually save my work first! I haven't changed anything on my end. This is the first time it allowed me to do that. That is how it should work.
