Fusion 360 won't load DXF

Hi there, i have a fairly large DXF file about 50mb and for some reason Fusion360 won't load it.

It'll become unresponsive and typically when that happens i'll just let it sit and hope that it's loading and will become responsive. I've left the computer like this for 2 hours and it still hasn't loaded. I tried using the autodesk Viewer to verify the file and it loaded it within 30 seconds. So i'm not sure why fusion360 can't handle this file.

P.s im running a 32 core 64 thread 3.9ghz turbo to 5.0ghz , 128gb ram gen 4 with terrabytes of nvme . Don't think it's the PC.

@jeff_strater

Please can someone help?

I can open that file in Autocad.  Format layer is not on the origin plane. makes it a 3d sketch depending on import settings.

As Fusion is a 3d modeller, what would you like to do with that dxf in Fusion?

I don't think you have waited long enough for that file to load.

Hi! What I’m trying to do is take the side profile and make it 1:1 and then turn it into a 3D model to build a desk around it. Are you able to help ? We don’t have AutoCAD or anything, and is 2 hours not enough time for fusion360 to load this file?

Your file has lots and lots and lots of closed regions and Fusion wants to calculate profile for each, all within a single sketch, and that takes huge time. Autodesk Viewer (and other DWG viewer/editors) doesn't do this so it opens much more smoothly. Also, your file is a drawing with 4 standard views of the model, and I bet you don't need all the views + annotations on the same sketch to begin with, i.e. even if Fusion imported the file you'll end up not using most of the lines.

Another point is that imported DXF or SVG is not a good approach in Fusion. Just search the forum and you'll find many many posts that users have problems because of using imported DXF/SVG, even with much simpler profiles than your file.

My suggestion is open the file in a DWG editor (there are free software if you don't have a commercial one), delete unwanted views/entities, clean up (e.g. delete repetitions to do them later by Fusion's features) and only import the lighter version into Fusion.

Side view has 4 separate pieces, there are double lines at the boundary in several places.

Open the file in your viewer.  Measure and then draw it in Fusion will be more productive.

No 2 hours would be too short, more likely 2 days.

I saved out the side view only, see how you go.

Oh wow! 2 days! Thank god I left the computer there. The scaling says 1:10. How would it be possible to scale the side view profile to be 1:1?
And because I haven’t seen it yet, is it possible for you to please help me and make it a 1:1 and export it as a sketch? Or perhaps extrude it into a body with the proper width ?

Quicker to measure / draw in Fusion.

This one is metric and fullsize.

Hi! This DXF file is probably exported from a drawing sheet with associative drawing views from a 3D model. There is so much detail prohibiting it from being created in 2D.

I suggest you open the DXF in DWG TrueView (free). Then use it as a measurement guide to recreate the model in Fusion. It should not be too difficult.

Many thanks!
