Fusion 360 Freezing when enabling capture design history

When I import a model from another source (E.G. a step file) fusion starts by default without capturing design history (timeline off). When I enable "capture design history" it freezes Fusion . It looks like the program is doing some calculations but after several hours of leaving the pc alone, there's no progress.

When I want to import a model that is made in Fusion 360 into this imported model i get a message that it's is not supported (yet) to import a model with design history enabled into a model that has not...

So basicly I'm stuck and I can't combine these models.

How to solve?

OK i just found that it takes fusion a really long time to enable design history (3,5 hours! during which you can't do anything).

is this normal???

Hi @info7JY2S,

thank you for posting! I tracked a similar report of Fusion 360 struggling to convert an imported design containing a large amount of components and features from direct to parametric.

Is it crucial for you to work on the model with the design history being captured? If not, try the following:

  1. Open the parametric Fusion 360 design that you would like to combine with the imported design
  2. Go to File -> Save As... and create a copy of the parametric Fusion 360 design
  3. Open the copied Fusion 360 design
  4. Disable capturing the design history
  5. Insert the imported design

Let me know if that helps.

If you would like me to submit the models for investigation, please share links to both of them with me (right-click on the design thumbnails -> Share Public Link). You can also send the links in a private message.

Thanks in advance!

Most of the time i need the sheet metal function and this doesn't work without capturing history.

Also i need to design these sheet metal so that they fit on the imported model.

So this would only help for non sheet metal designs.

Hi @info7JY2S,

thanks for the clarification. Could you send me the links to the models for further investigation? Thanks!

@pawel.potyrala, I'm having the same issue but noticed nobody attached a file for you to examine yet.  I tried turning on Capture Design History so I can design a part with a relationship to the imported IGES file and Fusion 360 just freezes indefinitely.

The link to the part that repros the problem is here:  https://a360.co/2RSqncP

The original IGES file can be found here:  http://www.masterflux.com/userimages/File/mx-dgmx0031_rel-m.zip

This doesn't answer your question, but try the attached file.

That did the trick, thanks...but what was the secret sauce you used?

Autodesk Inventor Professional

I didn't even take a look at it (the original IGES) in Fusion to see what might be done there.

Be aware that whoever did the original design did not model true helical threads.

Those "threads" will not function.

Hi all,

Fusion September release has improved the performance of enabling "capture design history". Please let us know if you have any feedback regarding on this.

Thanks,
