Fusion 360 exports empty files, sat export will not load

Hello, I'm new to Fusion 360 but I hope someone can provide some insight into difficulty I'm having with exporting file types.

My situation is that I have opened a 3D stl file in Fusion 360 and now I would like to export it to a 3D format that will load in my CAD software such that I can view it as a 3D object. My software can open dwg and dxf files and can import sat.

I've tried to export all three types from Fusion 360 and so far any attempts at dwg and dxf result in empty files and sat just comes out with "_acisinERROR: Failed to load the file".

Can anybody help with this? Should I try a different approach?

I think it's because of mesh. You need to convert the design to a BRep (normal solid bodies that you can draw in CAD software) before exporting. For some designs this conversion is possible (but not easy). And for some you'd really better take it as a reference and design using Fusion's tool. If you can share your STL here forum users might be able to help in conversion (if possible at all).

Hi @paul.g4U8R4

To export the mesh data into the .stp/any other 3D file format follow the below steps.

  1. Turn Off the capturing design history.
  2. Right-click on the mesh body and convert it to Mesh to BRep.

  3. Export the newly created body to the .stp file/any other 3D format.

If the provided solution doesn't work, please share the file so that we have a closer look and suggest accordingly.

Thanks,

Pramod

Thank you for your replies hamidsh and pramod.pk2XX6G. I have had success!

As far as I can tell design history was already turned off, so that may have helped.

I wasn't clear with regard to converting to brep, being as unfamiliar as I am with Fusion 360, however, in searching this forum about the subject I inferred the necessary steps.

In the "design" workspace I switched to the "mesh" category, selected the "modify" down arrow, and selected "convert mesh" from the menu that appeared. The "convert mesh" dialog box popped up and the "body" option indicated "select", while the "method" option indicated "faceted". I box selected the entire mesh object and selected "OK".

After that I was able to export to dwg and achieve precisely the objective I was working towards. The end result after following the steps I listed also allowed me to export to sat successfully and load the file into my cad software.

Thanks again for the help! 😊
