Fully defining sketch elements

Hi, I'm very new to Fusion 360 and thought that starting a project would be the best way to teach myself.

I'm attempting to create a sketch element before carrying out a circular pattern of it. It is a single tooth form on a clock escape wheel, but two elements of it refuse to become fully defined meaning that when I carry out the circular pattern I don't have a body that can be extruded.

I enclose my sketch to date - you'll need to zoom in significantly to see the tooth form on the outer rim and the two blue lines that are giving the trouble. Any help in solving my dilemma will be gratefully received!

so I am not sure what your goal is precisely but I am assuming you are going to want to pattern the single tooth?  if so you may be better off making the base wheel and extruding it and then sketching a tooth afterwards.  i find doing heavy single sketches sometimes can be tedious and can lead to mistakes, but thats just me.  i am not sure if in fusion you can features and have them join yet, i'm playing with it now but i don't see a smooth way to do it and be able to go back in and edit the pattern if need be.  but you can edit the second sketch and its pattern will update fine.  i tested that out. just another way of doing it.

for your initial dilema, your construction lines were a bit confusing but i think the issue you were having is when trying to extrude you need to select the items you want to extrude so you would select the spoke and as long as all lines are closed it should highlight that pattern to be extruded.  you can extrude a fully undefined sketch if you want as long as its closed.  all those construction lines may hide stray line segments or small breaks bewteen line joints that won't allow the sketch to be extruded.

Thanks a lot for the suggestions guys. It looks as if I've been over-complicating things by attempting to define everything on a sketch first.

I'll certainly take your ideas on-board, and thanks again.
